Why Are Airlines Hiring So Many Pilots?

Airlines are on a hiring binge for pilots to combat the chaos at U.S. airports. Due to the pandemic, numerous pilots retired and no new pilots were trained. Now, some airlines are tripling the average salary of a pilot to boost applications. At Piedmont Airlines, they're churning out 40 new pilots every month. These pilots-in-training already logged 1,500 hours of flight time. However, they must go through five weeks of classroom instruction and 40 hours in a simulator.

I guess $93, 000 is a good starting salary but I was surprised it’s 3 times what it was. I hope these new pilots have excellent background checks, start with commuter planes & fly with experienced pilots for a nice long time.

When we (the Taxpayers) bailed out the Airlines during the Pandemic instead of using that to keep their employees on the payroll they pushed many into early retirement and stopped classes as they told schools they won't be hiring.
Why did they use that money for early retirement packages and stock buybacks when they were supposed to use it to keep the employees paid during the Pandemic while keeping pilots and other employees on hold.

As an international student from the Caribbean, I would LOVE to become a pilot for any of the US airlines. It’s been my dream and passion for flying, but a lot of people don’t get into this profession because it’s soooo expensiveee for the training and everything. If airlines really made it easier with scholarships, contracts or anything, I’m sure the pilot shortage would of been relived a bit.

I keep hearing stories of airlines around the world being ill-prepared. Did they think the pandemic was going to last forever?!

I got of a plane on June 29 and it was crazy. On the terminal train it was packed and some people lean over other people on the seats. I hope that some airports or adding new airlines because that would also be a huge help. But Let’s All congratulate All Pilots Great Deeds. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Remove the 1500 hour rule that isn’t proven to make pilots safer but actually on the contrary some pilots worked in shady operations have picked up dangerous habits and attitudes while acquiring those hours . Most countries hire the pilots right out of high school and college and put them through a proper training course designed for initial pilots . Do that and the pilot shortage will be resolved and safety will improve

Just don’t lower a single quality on training and the pilots will do fine.

Reaching 1, 500 hrs is no joke. It aint cheap either.

Even with the rise of new recruits, they should not be rushed into training than regular pilots. Flight safety is of high priority and undertrained pilots could lead to tragedies.

Now this is dangerous. Hopefully they only hire properly trained and qualified people instead of taking the Army's approach of recruiting.

I'm worried there will be a generation of mediocre/rushed/bare minimum pilots but fingers crossed it's done right

I’m in flight school right now and I think it will be worth it. Sure regional airliners average $93, 000 a year but in the Majors the pay varies on position and seniority ranging from $130, 000 - $500, 000 a year which will totally make up for the high training cost.
