NASA recently discovered another gigantic asteroid that’s more than thrice the height of the Empire State Building
The asteroid 138791, also known as 2001 CB21, is about 4265 feet wide and has been categorised by Nasa as a “potentially hazardous object” due to its relative proximity to the Earth while shooting past.
NASA is keeping close eye on this giant asteroid that is just over a month away from a close approach to Earth.
Nasa has also put the asteroid on its Earth Close Approaches list.
This potentially dangerous asteroid is said to be up to 4,265 feet wide.
For comparison, at its maximum estimated size, it would be nearly thrice the size of Empire State Building in New York.
NASA have included this asteroid within the listing of asteroids passing very near Earth.
While it will be close to Earth, it will safely pass from an estimated distance of 3 million miles away.
As per Nasa, Asteroid 2001 CB21 will speed past Earth at around 27,000 miles per hour in the early hours of March 4.
That means the space agency has got just over a month to prepare for the flypast.
An asteroid of this size could do some really serious damage but the big relief is it’s not expected to hit Earth. As NASA said, that the asteroid 2001 CB21 is likely to shoot past us on March 4.
According to NASA, asteroids with more than 460 feet in size with orbits within 4.6 million miles of the Earth’s orbit around the sun are categorized as Potentially hazardous asteroids or PHA.
Space agencies regularly track more than 28,000 known asteroids as they orbit the Sun, and occasionally cross Earth's orbit.
NASA says none of the known asteroids are expected to collide with Earth at any point in the near future, but there are some asteroids whose orbits aren't known.
