Size and Distance. Apophis is about 1, 100 feet (340 meters) in width. It's expected to safely pass close to Earth – within 19, 794 miles (31, 860 kilometers) from our planet's surface – on April 13, 2029. This will be the closest approach to Earth by an asteroid of this size that scientists have known about in advance.

Even a slight miscalculation means it hits.
I remember when nasa miscalculated the speed of a probe to mars resulting in the thing landed at speed and is now buried in the martian soil.
And then I think, _"Why would they tell us if it was going to hit?"

The problem is when it passes between Earth and the moon, Earth's gravitational influence will change Apophis next orbit and 2036 is the visit we should be worrying about.

The amount of force acting on the ISS that slowly causes it to lose altitude is about the same force as the weight of a sheet of paper, it doesn't take much force to affect another "body", and the amount of that effect is amplified over time even if it is a very small force.
