Why thieves are targeting point-of-sale debit terminals

It took a thief less than nine minutes after stealing a point-of-sale terminal to hack into and issue a fraudulent refund.

start putting your terminals in the safe before you close shop.

The banks fraud protection system should be detecting this unusual spike in refunds from a merchant. Refunds are a rare event when compared with sales, particular for some business would rarely if at all refund under normal circumstances. The system could clearly see a pattern and flag it, block further activity limiting damage.

Use a refund password/pin on the machine and keep portable machines out of sight when business is closed.

You know what's funny a few months ago I was at a car wash washing my car. Then this guy parked his car close to me then proceeded to go to the trunk of his car and pulled out one of those terminals and plugged his phone into it. And was there for about 10 mins downloading (I assume ) stuff off the machine onto a phone then after about 5-7 mins he placed it in his trunk and drove off. But I took his license plate down

I thought refunds can only be refunded to the original card that made the purchase?

By saying thieves 'hacked' into stolen terminals, you mean press the refund button then swipe their card and enter a dollar amount. Probably no password on most businesses machines right now

Don't feel sorry for these criminals, they need to go to prison and stay there for at least 20 years, I don't know why some Canadians feel sorry for them and advocate for them.
