Gas stations should make checking the credit card machines once or twice daily an employee task.

Caught on camera and still pleads "not guilty". Lying should be another charge.

My heart trully hurts for the senior folks who barely get by and simply not aware of these thefts.

I work at a credit card call center and seriously the rise in fraud is unprecedented. It's the majority of my day helping account holders deal with fraudulent transactions.. scary

“Just move on to the next terminal“ how about notifying a employee and have them take a look so the next person who uses it won’t be the next victim

So it cost consumers $1 billion dollars annually, and yet when these scammers are caught they get a slap on the wrist. Why should they stop?

My credit card information was stolen and the police said most likely from a skimmer. I was notified by my credit card company when my card info was used in New York the same day I purchased a pizza in another state. What’s sad is anytime you hand over a credit card or give the information, your at risk. My husband’s grandmother’s credit card information was stolen by an employee with a satellite company for tv service. Crazy world we live in.

His suggestions of "feel the skimmer, if it doesn't feel right, don't use it." How about reporting it instead of letting another person fall victim to it....Duh!

There's one HUGE piece of information this story didn't mention. Skimming only works with the magnetic strip part of the card. The chip can't be skimmed, because it generates a one time use code every time it's used. Translation: only use the chip when making purchases and you'll be safe. Don't use the swipe method. Don't use the tap feature either, because that uses NFC and can be picked up by someone near by. Use the chip and you're good.

For the few places that ONLY have swipe technology, you should either 1. pay in cash or 2. simply go somewhere else.

Super glue a small lego to the outside face of the skimmer so that the mold fitted skimmer case doesn't fit.

If you frequent fast food drive thrus this happens a lot as well. Only when going through the drive thru when handing your card to the employee. A lot of employees are the ones with the card scanners.

Be careful at self-checkouts too. It’s happening in the grocery stores too.

I remember hearing about this happening at gas stations years ago. The major tip I heard about was look for the security tape that is there. If it's disconnected/cut then it probably was tampered with. Obviously, it's not a 100% safeguard but it's a sign if it's been messed with.

This happened to me at an AutoZone in my area. I think an actual employee placed the reader. I reported it to the management but they did nothing. Next time, I'd report to the FBI.

I wish they would've shown us how to distinguish skimmers rather than explaining briefly.

In some countries, people lose their hands for doing this.

We all need to check ourselves at all times. I don’t trust the owners/employees either.
