This can work, but you lose all GPU acceleration when selecting "Software Only". Notice the render bar in the timeline turns red from yellow in most cases (this example is likely using some effects that aren't GPU accelerated which is why the whole thing is showing red beforehand).

I'm getting this error message while trying to use masks while animating titles. Tried to follow your recipe but the video rendering and playback menu is greyed out. Won't let me change it to software only. Weird.

For me, clearing Preferences, deleting Media Cache, deleting Render files, rebooting, etc did not work. There is a bug in Premiere when the Morph Cut spans an After Effects composition that is nested in the Premiere timeline, where it will always throw this exception. To work around the problem, export the After Effects composition alone, then replace it in the timeline with the new video file before applying the Morph Cut.

CPU rendering is always my final render output. I will use GPU when editing to speed things up. I've found when you have errors, check you GPU drivers and install any updates to match with Adobe's constant updates. Sometimes rolling back old drivers helps fix the issue as well.
