I’m a meat lover, but today I’m taking on the vegan food scene in Berlin! From vegan Currywurst to sushi that looks like salmon but isn’t. I’m on a mission to see if plant-based food can actually impress me and become a vegan by the end of the day?

The trick to vegan and vegetarian food is to think of it as its own thing and stop trying to think of it as a substitute for something else.

As a general rule, most of the overly specific replacement products (like vegan salmon) will be a disappointment. There are some exceptions.
Like many others have commented, it's best to have a "does it taste good?" attitude rather than a "does it taste the same?" attitude.

As a vegan I think it is great that you are open to trying new things and share it with everyone as a meat eater. For sure there will be food that is more to your taste than others, my only advice would be to not generalize one vegan sushi or croissant to all vegan food in that category. Every restaurant has their adaptation, some like to do stuff from scratch, others to use processed raw material, and in that sense, it is like trying a Mexican restaurant or an Italian once, and maybe you didn't like that restaurant, not the possibilities of the type of food. Hope you enjoy it and keep trying new things!

It's all about appreciating flavours and textures for their own merit. As a vegetarian/vegan for 16 years I truly believe you cannot compare meat with vegan substitutes but there is so much to enjoy in the thing itself, I haven't missed meat this whole time.

I find it funny that you'd be surprised by the vegan/vegetarian options for the Vietnamese food. Some of my favorite vegan/veg are Vietnamese because they know how to make great "meat substitutes". I live in a big Vietnamese population in California so I am not short of places to eat, but I always come back to those vegan/veg places cause they are still so great when I'm in the mood for them.

Am I the only one that thinks it would be so fun to watch Uyen try cooking vegan takes on Vietnamese food? I think she would be so good at it! Especially since she seems to prefer making things from scratch.

As a vegan, I find your open-minded attitude refreshing!

I'm vietnamese, her saying there aren't a lot of vegan food in Vietnam is misinformation, which i don't blame her because she lives in the rural area. Over 10% of Vietnamese are Buddhist and its really not hard to find Buddhist restaurant which serves vegan food and for realllly cheap.

Mediterranean has many "accidental" vegan dishes, hummus, falafel, baba ghanoush, eggplant in tomato sauce, and many more I can't remember.
Italian food, pasta with tomato sauce, sauteen with peppers and onions.
Mexixan food, bean and rice dishes. Grilled veggies for fajitas.
And of course Indian food

Me and my bf have been vegan for 7 years now and we go on a trip to Berlin every 2 years or so specifically for the food! The second location you visited is where we went last time as well and it was our favourite spot <3 I love that you're trying different things!

Just remember if you don’t like one version of vegan food, that doesn’t mean you won’t like another version or from another cook.

I’m vegetarian (mostly plant based though) and Imo what restaurants (and in general the food industry) are doing wrong is trying so hard to imitate meat. Instead of simply going for dishes that were created to be vegetarian or vegan from the start. Asian cuisine especially has a LOT of vegetarian and vegan dishes that are very tasty and contain no meat whatsoever.

As a almost 10 year vegan, I am very glad you made this video and gave some vegan food a try. You made me want to travel to Berlin :) it looks like they have some awesome stuff. Would love to see you do this again with German boyfriend giving his ratings too behind the camera XD since you both have a lot of different food preferences. I love your channel and look forward to watching more videos :)

I have been vegan for 20 years and I love all the new different options opening up and the international cuisine getting accessible for vegans eating out.
Btw Baking Herrmann is a great channel who makes tradional plant based food from around the world.

I would love to go to that Berlin plant-based grocery store with a travel group and try all the unique creations! Made me so happy that Uyen is plant-based curious, adventurous, and open-minded!

Going for cuisines with vegetable-rich traditions is always gonna win!
I didn't have too much trouble finding vegetarian food in Vietnam, in the main cities.

I really appreciate this experiment! And that even though you were skeptical at the beginning, you did not let that stop you from enjoying and giving due credit when dishes were as good or better than non-vegan/or non-plant-based ones.

Hope this will encourage more plant-based eating at home!
