I think it's totally fine to grab a current-gen GPU right before a new one drops. In fact, I see it as a smart move. You can save some cash and you already know how to balance it with other components in your system. Most games need to run on a mid-range GPU at launch because that's where the bulk of the money is. That said, a high-end GPU will definitely boost performance but no one’s optimizing for something that hasn’t even been released yet :) It takes time for the developers to fully utilize all the new features but at that point a new generation comes out again.

i'm happy with full hd 240hz gaming. my rx6950xt is holding pretty well with my r7 5800x3d
but WOW, prices are like 5x higher for 1.3x performance...
i don't think input lag will lower with higher resolutions, nor that newer gen will actually be better.
i need optimized games, not graphics cards that are made for unoptimized games!
