I only buy lower mileage cars from old/older people that have a nice home. If they take care of their home, you can bet they also take care of the car. They're also afraid to break down on the road, so they do all the required maintenance.

I bought a car on eBay auction once. $1800 winning bid+$200 dealership fee+$800 shipping. Still driving that car 11+ years later 😎

I worked at a car auction for 3 months. Worst job I ever had but I learned alot! I actually secretly bought a Chevy Blazer from the auction too while I worked there (Employees were not allowed to buy vehicles) and it ended up being a great truck. Bottom line, If you go to the auction and are capable of giving the vehicle a quick 5 min inspection and you know what your getting yourself into there's still plenty of great deals to be had. But he took the words straight out of my mouth when he said "all the cars are at the auction for a reason". I used to preach this to anyone that would ask about buying an auction car, the car got sent to the auction because the dealer either could not or did not want to sell it on their own lot.

Family bought a old 1990 bmw convertible at police auction, it was a solid, largely reliable and dependable, very lovable vehicle for 10+ years and I regret selling it. 2 cents, my E30 was a damn fine car, and while not TOYOTA reliable, was still perfectly reasonably reliable and tons of fun to drive.

I think there was a time when an auction car could have been a good situation. Twenty years ago, I bought an old Celica for $1300. It had a persistent oil leak that took a long time to find. Once I fixed it, it ran for years and brought me $1600 when I sold it.

Last year I bought a 1990 Miata for $1, 700 with 92k miles and a clean title at an auction. It was from an older lady who just didn't drive it anymore and didn't want to pay for a new clutch. I'm sure there's all kinds of lemons out there, but there are some great deals to be had.

Thanks for the advice Scotty. I was at an auction recently and saw a 2004 Jeep Wrangler with only 42, 000 miles had been sold for about $5, 200. I thought "Wow the winner of this Jeep got super lucky." However, I later saw an article that said the new owner was suing the auction company about (in my own words) "information never disclosed at the auction." Intrigued, I looked into it and discovered that the new owner learned the Jeep had been wrecked in a side impact crash, totaled by the insurance company, repaired and then auctioned off. I hope the owner wins their suit and gets a new Jeep.

Scotty, thank you so much for posting all these little vids, especially this one. I have long thought to buy an auction car, but will now steer clear of these kind of temptations.

I very much appreciate your channel and your words of wisdom.

government auctions can be good especially when they are getting rid of old fleet vehicles which have been maintained

I bought a lot of cars at auctions. I never buy from auctions that don't let you look over the car in the lot and have you take keys and start it the previous day.

There are so many auction cars for sale down here in Arizona, it's rediculous. There are just as many dealerships as there are auctions. Thank you for the very valuable information, Scotty.

Good advice overall. In 2006, I bought a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP from a dealer whose place was converted from an old gas station. He probably got it from an auction. It had a serious electrical problem that affected the ignition circuit that was well hidden, didn't show during my test driving it and was difficult to figure out. But I ultimately got it figured out and still drive this car today.
