One thing to add about frame rates. While yes, they are adjustable. Please remember that when you plug in to an HDTV using the dock or another method, the TV will see a signal, but give you an error stating the format is not supported. What this means is that you need to unplug your Deck, and change the FPS to either 30, 60, or 120 fps (if your TV can do 120). Then plug the Deck back in. Hopefully this info helps someone.

My deck just got shipped, so very soon I can finally join in instead of living vicariously through your content. Thank you for the tips and other SD content you've been providing.

Been watching for a few weeks before I got my Steamdeck last week, and every episode I learn something new about to device . I feel like the steam deck community is all learning and growing together, can't wait for more people to get their hands on one. It's worth the wait.

One fun tip, if you add a non Steam game that also has a Steam version (maybe you bought it from a different store for instance) it will not by default show the Steam community configs for that game when browsing. If you set the shortcut name to the AppID Steam uses for the Steam version of the game it'll let you browse them. Say for instance you own the GOG version of Cyberpunk 2077 and add it to Steam, if you change the name to 1091500 (visible in the URL of the store page) you can see the ones people who own it on Steam have come up with, then rename back to a more readable one when you find one you like. Don't have a Deck yet so can't 100% verify it'll work still there, but I've been using the trick for years with my Steam Controller/Steam Input with other controllers/etc and would be odd if they changed it now

==EDIT== Have the Deck now, can confirm it still works. Have to export as a template and rechoose if you rename it back, I think I just always left it as the APPID and went by picture instead of name so never noticed that bit. There's also a Steam URI you can run from a browser to pop the configurator for a game without doing the renaming bit if that's easier for you, still need to do the export as template bit. Enter in a browser and set to open in Steam

==EDIT 2== Trying out URI method, can't get it to work properly even on desktop desktop (as opposed to desktop mode on the Deck), just causes a crash for games I don't own on Steam, got bored with troubleshooting since the renaming method has always worked for me. Could halve the renaming steps by creating a dummy non Steam game that doesn't actually launch anything important and continually renaming that rather than renaming the shortcut for the game itself I suppose.

Proton-GE is really a game changer. It even works with Half-Life 2 mods that run on the old Source SDK versions, which are not supported by default.

Get at minimum a USB to USBC dongle, so you can plug something like a keyboard, mouse, or flash drive directly into the Steam deck. Preferably get a USBC-compatible docking station with power supply so you can just plug in all your devices at the same time, in addition to charging. Basically turning the Steam deck into an actual desktop computer. I just use the docking station off my work computer any time I need to do something in Desktop mode, and it works perfectly.

I'm creating a Youtube playlist to watch after I get my Steam Deck and this is going right in with many of your other videos. Thanks for all you do!

Having issues getting a game to run that uses an external software such as Ubisoft. If you have tried using all the different versions of proton and still those games aren't working. Try deleting the proton files through the quick game manage menu for the game. It solved the issue immediately for me. Just wanted to say a huge thank you to this channel for the content and advice since early deck announcement. I will keep checking in even though myself and people around me are now all getting our decks. 😊❤

Tip a lot of games that haven’t been evaluated for compatibility actually work great. They even sometimes have official controller layouts

I opened the controller configurator on my deck and was absolutely ecstatic about how they go into detail to explain steams input configurator. I just feel like it's so underrated and you can do an unfathomable amount of configuring and customizing! As someone who ran steam link regularly on my switch the explanation for everyday users made me happy!

TIP: Try lowering the deadzone on your analog sticks. It will make them feel more responsive and more precise. Especially with them being new, the deadzone can be made rather tight.

Hey Bill, came across your channel by association, watched your video and subscribed instantaneously, you have a great communicator’s style that I dig, your rhythm was on point and professional, great great content, thanks for the useful info.
I just got my Steam Deck allocation, I put down my $5.00 bucks in July 2021 and finally got the anticipated email inviting me to finish paying for my 512 GB Deck, I’m giddy!!!!

I LOVE the second tip about lowering the frame rate and refresh rate. I noticed Horizon Zero Dawn had a cap of 40 by default (unless I accidentally changed something) but switching those values both to 40 and flipping on Vsync in game makes for an extremely smooth frame delivery experience.
