How to price your art to sell can be confusing as there are so many factors that you need to take into consideration. Most artists creating artwork in their art studios whether it be for art fairs, online art websites, galleries, or sold directly by you have to consider how to price artwork correctly. There are many methods that are outlined online, like the per square inch method, hourly wage, or the cost of art supplies to create the original painting multiplied by a number determined by your skill level. How do you know which method to price your art paintings is right for you?

In this video, I will explain which method of pricing my original paintings I chose plus the reasons why. I will also share the one mistake or caution you should be aware of so you don't stall your art career.

I just retired from a career that started as a freelance illustrator and ended in numerous areas in the advertising/marketing industry. Even though I was an illustration major in college, I would seriously advise budding artists to be business majors and take art classes along the way. Your advice is spot on! In my retirement I’m getting back to non commercial art and will be using your ideas to market my work. My little piece of advice for artists new to this is to paint more so that the sheer volume keeps you from falling in love with your own creations.

To be honest your success is all because of that positive karma you build for yourself, you give so much that other artists would be too selfish to do (as myself, maybe it's because I'm young and still have a lot to learn), you inspire so much, you reply every time, you radiate positivity and for just the few weeks that I've been following you I feel so inspired, motivated and grateful that I've stumbled upon such an amazing human. You deserve all the best!

As a fellow Virgo, perfectionist, and artist, I'm dying laughing! Everything you said is so true! LOL

Thank you, Lori. This topic is incredibly stress inducing for me. I struggle to set a price that's fair to me for time/supplies and to the buyer. I like the square inch idea. I've hesitated to price myself too low but this makes sense. Better to get the selling momentum going for a lower price than not at all.

Oh good we finally get to see what that painting is with the legs. I always wondered what that was when you showed only the legs.

I did a time management experiment thought I would approach it like I would in my past "jobs" worked out my hourly rate $200 cool lol. I've taken to looking at the canvas sizes and going right this is going to be priced at xyz dollars. I'm doing some paid advertising so factor that in as well materials etc just like I would in any other business so glad you talk about this.

Helpful tips for how to price artwork is always valuable. I like the per square inch method, which is very popular. Thanks for sharing!😊

The square inch method works only if you paint more or less same sizes. If you offer different size ranges, this method will not do justice to your smaller work. For a miniature of let's say 8x8in you would charge just 32 bucks. Not every smaller work is done faster than a bigger canvas. So, you won't be willing to use this square inch method. Way more consistent and with a lesser spread is using the perimeter (or just length+width) and a multiplier (factor), which you adjust as your prices grow. For example, your 30x30in x factor 7, 5 = 450 USD, and a 8x8in painting with the factor 7, 5 would cost (8+8)x7, 5= 120 USD, which is a more coherent and consistent way to reflect your sizes.

That is the most real and honest explanation on pricing art from anything I have seen on line. Your a wonderful and humorous lady, how you represent your self is an example for all fellow artists. I enjoy your channel and style, but it is your honesty that really made me sub you. Look forward to listening and watching you again.

I am going to start on line with etsy. At 75 I don’t want to do shows. Your recommendation for for pricing by square inch is great. Another great point is not to price yourself out of the market and then trying a fire sale which will negatively hurt the people who bought from you at your original price. Your current prices are much higher than the 50 cent per inch. You obviously have earned that price point. Great advice.

I horde all my art, sculptures paintings drawings textile crafts, lol. I make this art for me, not to sell. Someone someday is gonna make a mint off of my love. Or there will be a nice looking hill at the dump
