"Do you not trust your kidneys?"
"No, I don't. Family history of stones and all that."

The fact that you make me feel like I'm in on the joke despite having no experience in the medical field in EVERY video you make shows what a good sense of humor you have

I am a med student. I was in noon conference today and the nephrologist (who had never seen this video) called out a resident for her giant water bottle out of the blue and gave her a ton of crap for it. Yes, I showed him this video after his presentation was over. He laughed. 😂

If I only drank when I felt thirsty, I would be consistently dehydrated.

"drink when you're thirsty" only works when you have constant access to water and can drink as soon as the urge hits, versus a single water break after 4-6 hours like at my hospital

Edited to add: I'm in PM&R, I don't have the energy to walk 15-18, 000 steps a day on seven floors of a 1, 000 bed, 5 wing building with a full messenger bag of supplies AND a half gallon water bottle. Besides, staff are also not allowed to drink on the floors, only your designated office (in the basement). Tell me you've never worked in healthcare without telling me you've never worked in healthcare...

Listen doc, my immune is too stupid to or too bored to know my hair follicles arent an enemy (Alopecia Universalis) and that messing with my lungs doesn't help (asthma) and that being in contact with cheap metals or pollen only harms me because it thinks its an enemy (exczema and seasonal allergies), So I have lost just about all other faith trust and confidence in the rest of my body doing its job lol.

Had a nephrology professor famously say “one dumb kidney is better than 10 smart docs”

Me hiking in hot weather: "I'd better drink 4 liters of water even if I don't feel thirsty."
At camp: "Wow I feel awful, my head is exploding, what's wrong with me?"
After eating dinner with a shitload of sodium: "Oh I suddenly feel fine now, how weird."

"Do you have two functional kidneys?" Me: No because I have cysts growing on them that are slowly killing them.

I had a kidney stone before and the only advice I got from medical professionals for prevention was to avoid dehydration so now I drink water constantly. I ain't letting that shit happen again if I can help it.

There is actually a thirst mechanism issue in people who drink a lot of caffeinated or sugary drinks, they wont feel thirsty despite needing water, it takes days or weeks of drinking *mainly* water for everything to start working properly. During this time you kind of need to adhere to some arbitrary amount of water to make sure you actually stay hydrated.

As someone with essentially no interoception, I don’t trust my body to tell me anything, so I’ve gotta monitor it and give it things the way an outsider would just watching me and asking if I’m in pain yet. That said, I don’t intend to insult homeostasis
