George RR Martin's Winds of Winter is FINISHED ?

My annual status update asking when IF EVER will George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire be finished.

At a convention in Albuquerque, he mentioned visiting Tolkein’s grave, and thinking about how he will be remembered. George has no kids, his legacy is how he will be remembered. He’s under tremendous pressure, and he’s making millions working with HBO (don’t forget he used to be a television writer). It makes sense that the stress and various projects (combined with the reception of the last few seasons of GoT) are slowing him down. Hopefully he has a plan in place that ensures we at least know the end of the story

“Gardener writing” isn’t a real thing. He wrote it originally having a 5 year gap, and it’s absolutely obvious there’s no way to fix him undoing that.

I think he has it all figured out, the problem is a combo of his perfectionism and the fact that he has to squeeze the sprawl artfully into two books, which seems almost impossible to do without dramatically breaking the narrative pace he has set from GoT, and what makes the books so good to begin with. I wish hed resign himself to 8 or 9 and take the pressure off fitting the amount of shit planned to happen in two books, its hard to fathom how it could be done

I read somewhere he did have a complete book at some point after 2015 but decided to rework it all. He'll finish it eventually but I'm afraid we'll all die before.

He obviously changed the book multiple times, there really isn’t a rush to release the book but my guess is if the book does come out it’ll probably not be as good as the first books of the series since he might have writers block along with maybe old age but I don’t wanna believe that

GRRM uses Wordstar. I remember typing a report using this back in 1986-87. The "PC" was more like an oscilloscope with keyboard, small screen without graphics. The secretary had an Apple Lisa with a mouse and a user interface with moveable rectangles that would later be called "windows".
Wordstar was pretty good. Full of practical keyboard shortcuts (no mouse, remember?). Much better than vi.

You know what I think? The ending of the show IS his ending (to the letter) and seeing how fans reacted to it, he has no idea how to rewrite it and gave up on it.

I used to be so invested...That was well over a decade ago. I've lost interest in the overall story at this point. I don't even care. Moved on from the dragons and convoluted and over reaching story lines at this point. It's played out. I'm just glad I didn't read the first book when it was released. How does one expect people to be interested and invested in a fantasy story for 3+ decades? People grow and tastes change. George is an idiot...

George RR Martin will never finish his book. The reason he will never finish. His book is because he’s an idiot and he doesn’t want to give up the fame that he’s got and he knows the second he writes his book he’ll go into obscurity.

People with this take are just revealing themselves as not knowing how writing - or working on any creative pursuit in general - actually goes. Broaden your horizons and try to create a piece of fiction yourself, and you'll see.

*sigh...i wish he'd just ask for some adive from more pro writers and maybe some help with them is what he needs but he needs to stop procrastinating if he ever wants to finish, but at this point i dont thinks he cares anymore
