I saw in a national geographic documentary once, that darker manes meant higher level of testosterone, which made them much more aggressive.

A thin light mane also means the lions live in highly bushy areas and it helps with their movements. Unlike dark heavy manes mostly found in grasslands

Actually, their manes get darker as they get older. The darker mane signifies maturity and experience, where as the younger male's manes are the ones that are lighter.

This just isn’t true, it mostly means the age and maturity of a lion. The older adult lions have darker thick haired mains while the young male lions just growing their mains out have lighter thin mains
