I'm a 70 year old no stripe white belt. Exercise, weight lose and camaraderie are my motivations. Been at it for the last 5 months and lost 22 pounds. Got my first submission last week. Don't get me wrong, I'm an expert in tapping! Great school. Wonderful new friends and great instructors. oos

I’m a 40 year old BJJ blue belt. Let me say your content and opinions are completely on point. I agree with all your videos.

I’m turning 56 this month, just started last week. I’m sore and realize how out of shape I am but it’s been great so far!

Started BJJ a little over a year ago at 40. It makes you feel alive and thankful that you're healthy enough to participate in something so difficult. I can't scramble and shoot blast doubles like the 20 somethings can, but I can hold my own. No man wants to be considered feeble. BJJ helps fight off the age demons and keeps you sharp.
That line from the movie "Act of Valor" always comes to mind.

"Before my father died, he said the worst thing about growing old was that other men stopped seeing you as dangerous. I've always remembered that, how being dangerous was sacred, a badge of honor. You live your life by a code, an ethos. Every man does. It's your shoreline

Just turned 50 and started two months ago. I love it and I'm going to keep going as long as my body will tolerate it.

Bjj is a great sport and is very humbling. Lot's of great people can be found in bjj dojos. I took up bjj before I turned 40 but quit at 48. This was partly due to injury but I found that despite some serious effort, my progress just stopped. My aim was to get purple by 50 but it started to look like I would never achieve it despite the effort so I lost motivation. Classic blue belt syndrome I suppose. My advice for anyone over 40 going into bjj is to make sure that you have an instructor who 'gets' you, because trust me, the body does change from the mid forties onwards no matter how fit you are. Also, rolling with people your own age is important because some younger guys can go too heavy and cause injuries. In terms of the street fight arguments-- forget them. Street fights are not fights at all but violent interactions and no martial art or combat sport can fully prepare you for everything that might come your way in such situations.

Great video. We have a podcast about men over 40 training Jiujitsu. Glad to hear that you didn’t really quit as a 3 stripe blue. Keep up the grind!

I turn 59 next week and thinking about starting to take classes. My friends think I’m an idiot.
I love watching MMA and I love watching grappling like the Danaher death squad with Gordon Ryan...I just LOVE it. It is a human chess match and fascinates me.
My wife and I are retiring in 3 years and will be traveling outside the country and it would give me more confidence if I felt like I can get in better shape and protect my wife and myself if something comes up that we can’t run away from. 59 is way over 40....but I really want to give it a shot. Thoughts ???

47 and just started. I've been lifting weights for 20+ years but BJJ is a completely different level of fitness.

USPSA competitive shooting would be right up your alley. Good way to train and become proficient with a firearm. There is a internationally recognized classification system as well within the organization as well (like belts).

I definitely want to see you to a video on the subject of Brazilian jiu-jitsu & self-defense.

Just started BJJ recently. I find it super fascinating and extremely valuable on so many levels. I just have to keep reminding myself that I’m turning 46…not 26. 😂

It's been awhile since you've posted a new video. How about a video with tips for a first tournament for a guy over 40?

Almost 52 years old. Recently, due to COVID, I have not been on the Mat (since March). Don't know how long I can stay away but for now, I am more concerned about staying safe for myself and my family. With that said, I do BJJ as it helps me stay focused mentally and physically: when practicing BJJ, one is always solving problems - trying to figure out a puzzle. Hopefully through sweat and repetition, one gets better and better at it and in the process lose some of the beer gut. It also keeps me humble, reminding me that anyone can kick my butt however, I am a "hard out, " I have a skill which they will have to deal with. Making GREAT friends of all ages is also great for old guys. In this world of tablets and iphones, having human to human conversations is a lost art especially for guys in my age group who did not grow up with these technologies.

I’m 60 and I can see myself taking it up by the time I’m 65. I’m still not done learning wing chun, and I did the karate thing in my youth.

I am really interested in Bjj over 40 [almost 50]. May seem really stupid but what I am most concerned about is that I sweat like crazy, I mean REALLY crazy. I am not in terrible shape for a 48 year old, I am pretty strong, not to flexible, and my cardio needs some bjj love, but damn, I sweat in a cold shower! This is truly what has held me back, any advice?

Helio gracie believed in survival(SELF DEFENSE ) mindset first, which is why we must use gloves as part of the self defense learning process. Most clubs say they teach self defense, but way too many black belts can't defend a punch or headlock standing or on the Ground. We must all thoroughly study the gran masters teaching methods before they are eventually lost forever !, ,
