The Scariest Mario Game Never Made

When one of my viewers suggested I play a recently-released horror-themed Mario 64 romhack, I was skeptical, but interested.

I had absolutely no idea what I was getting into.

There is Nothing Behind the Castle is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Even in the often-confounding world of romhacks, there's really nothing else like it.

Eh, I guess it's kinda just a B3313 ripoff.

Most horror themes tend to rely on excessive blood and gore but I think some of the best horror comes from things that touch on the psychological fears we all have.

I think what this is trying to say is, in a different universe, video game characters have consciousness, but they must see something wrong in their world in order to unlock that consciousness, and the sheer fact that a video game, on the outside, looks like a fun adventure, but on the inside, is a nightmare-fueled prison is terrifying. And, if my theory is correct, than any video game in that universe, the main character (or a side character, enemy, etc.) can see what is wrong with their world and realize there is no escape. Over time, slowly realizing that they are being put in the same loop over and over again, to play through levels, kill enemies, get more supplies, get upgrades, over and over again. The sheer thought of that makes my blood run cold.

This is psychological horror. It's incredible, how it doesn't really do anything very scary, but instead touches the fears you never knew you had.

The "L is real 2401" star is weird because one more thing that happend is that 24 years and 1 month after mario 64 relased, data miners found that Luigi was planed to be originally in the game but was scrapped.

The fact that he included some of the rom hack’s high quality cutscenes in the montage was kind of funny and added a bit of lightheartedness to the rom hack

I think the skull knows that the stars are the keys to the castle, and its goal is to stop Mario from finding them, but knowing Mario, it will take more than that to scare him away.
