It's like I always say: if the game isn't sold anywhere, then the download doesn't steal any money. If these companies are so angry, they should profit off of this obvious interest in what they apparently value so much.

And they wonder why people emulate and pirate games. Imagine not being able to play the original Psychonauts years from now because publishers are actively trying to prevent game preservation.

If the ESA doesn't want to make an exception to preserve legacy games, perhaps they'd prefer copyright law to be reworked so that after 10 years, games, movies, tv shows, books, articles, photos, works of art, software, sourcecode, and comics become public domain with no renewals.

ESA is also anti right to repair and has frequently gone against Rossmann in Courts

They don't want old games to compete with new ones. Fun is fun, and graphics don't matter that much.

Because all of the so-called "AAA" studios are doing nothing more than Live As Service, microtransaction, pay DLC riddled games and consumers are tired of it.

Key Takeaways: Game companies are being greedy, the fight for public domain is more important than ever, and hand helds are coming back.

All of this underscores how important public domain, reasonable copyright expiration, and physical owner ship is for the wellness of future generations

publishers... PLEASE DON'T BE STUPID.

its understandable that you can't support a dedicated server for ever, but AT LEAST, give players the possibility to mod the game the community can make their own servers.

This is something possible to do, heck, even custom servers for freaking nintendo wii/ds/3ds and wiiu exist now.

Infogrames, a french publisher, bought the Atari IP and label 20 years ago, so the "Atari" you thought was Atari the last 20 years has actually been Infogrames the whole time, and they are now going back to Infogrames lol. Crazy times...

They don’t want old games to exist so they can keep re-releasing the same thing over and over with no way to play the old one.

are we really shocked that Greedy Publishers are against preservation if they can't overly monetize it, we need to rework the law that as soon Companies drop support f a Digital work it becomes Public Domain

My take on the video game archiving is that if a company stops offering "reasonable" legitimate access to some media, they shouldn't be able to use copyright to prevent others from sharing it.

If old games were more accesible people would start to notice that old games are better than the new releases and would held the studios accountible, why pay 70 $ for a monetized game when the arcade 20 yo og title works better. Its the same principle as with old movies, why do cinemas dont tend to rescreen classics?

So does this mean that tattoo artists are allowed to make money off of every picture, movie, or TV appearance of the Person with said tattoo? HELL NO. They were commissioned to do the art; after that, they no longer own it. But if they want to fight for it, then maybe they need to start paying the artists and companies who own the rights to characters that they tattoo on people. No more DBZ or Kingdom Hearts tattoos for anyone.

What a backward world we live in, companies can steal from you what you've paid for, and gamers need to be protect from emotes due to them being so sensitive that they might be offended and cry. What a joke humanity has become.

Why TF is the ESA controlled by the giants in the industry itself?!?!?

Does no one see how insanely conflicted of interest that is?!?

Yeah, copyright needs to be changed so that it lasts only as long as a product is available commercially. As soon as it’s withdrawn from sale, then it’s public domain forever. That should include everything, like books, movies, etc. That should both make companies like Disney happy, as they can keep selling Mickey Mouse stuff perpetually, but also get conservationists the ability to save abandoned products, or other companies a chance to innovate and offer new products.

They're honestly kinda stupid for not allowing legal ways to keep these games available even when paid, instead we rely on pirates to preserve them.
