I feel like an evil Cadence would be obsessive and controlling. That could’ve been a really cool storyline to explore later on in the series; when love/friendship takes a bad turn.

4:20 and the best thing about it is that some people thought about the same thing like 10 years ago - the fan animation "The Fall of the Crystal Empire" shows how she got infected and yeah that's mindblowing

Theory story of queen chrysalis: (can’t decide on name) was a third princess, bringing the stars into view for foals to count before bed. She wasn’t related to the royal sisters, but only them knew. One day, she found out her family was a group of rock farmers (yes she is related to Pinkie Pie) that were dull colored and boring but past chrysalis wasn’t because of a spell that made her think she actually looked like she would be royalty. The jealous alicorn (she was enchanted to have unicorn and Pegasus magic by the sisters) turned into queen chrysalis and left canterlot. She then realized the amount of power she had, being able to transform and feed off of love. She built a hive and started the changeling species using pure magic to make it so she could create more, and when she found out about the royal wedding, she made a plan to replace princess Cadence and after success she started working on a plan to imprison the sisters and control the sun, moon, as well as the stars

In my view, the "nightmare force" is not a parasite... it is not even conscious.
Think, the nightmare force in Luna didn't do bad things because that made her strong, she did bad things based on Luna's wish before transforming:
To be adored...to be important.
So much so that when she appears in episodes 1 and 2 of the first season, her first reaction is to be frustrated at being forgotten... just as Luna felt frustrated at not being seen... not being adored.
The strength of the nightmare is just a representation of the being's subconscious.
When you hold on to bad feelings, eventually they come back worse...but they are not aware...it is just you...without all the other feelings.
Imagine the following situation:
Take away Luna's empathy, love, gratitude, sadness and joy and leave only the following emotions:
Anger, envy and resentment.
It's exactly how the nightmare moon behaves
