WHAT IS RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME:
Restless leg syndrome or RLS, also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is a common condition of the nervous system. It is very common and affects at least 2% of the population. done
It typically causes an overwhelming urge to move your legs and an uncomfortable sensation in your legs. The sensation may also affect your arms, chest and face.

It's been described by some as:
Tingling, burning, itching or throbbing. A "creepy-crawly" feeling. Feeling like fizzy water is inside the blood vessels in the legs. A painful cramping sensation in the legs.

These unpleasant sensations can range from mild to unbearable and are usually worse in the evening and during the night. They can often be relieved by moving or rubbing your legs. Some people experience symptoms occasionally, while others have them every day.

People with Restless leg syndrome may find it difficult to sit for long periods of time (for example, on a long train journey). More than 80% of people with restless leg syndrome also have periodic limb movements in sleep or PLMS for short. If you have PLMS, your leg will jerk or twitch uncontrollably, usually at night while you're asleep. The movements are short and repetitive, and usually occur every 20 to 40 seconds. PLMS can be severe enough to wake you up. The involuntary leg movements can also occur when you're awake and resting.

WHAT CAUSES RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME:
When it comes to understanding the causes and treating Restless leg syndrome, there are two major categories primary and secondary.

Primary Restless leg syndrome is where there is no identifiable cause, it tends to start at a much younger age and there is often a positive family history in around two thirds of patients.

Now before we run through the tips that can help with Restless leg syndrome its super important that you first speak to your healthcare professional to make sure there are no underlying health conditions, once you’ve done that feel free to try any of these tips.

SEEKING MEDICAL ADVICE FOR RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME:
If any of these lifestyle tips do not work for you or if you have any concerns about the frequency and severity of the symptoms described earlier, you may need to speak to a healthcare professional.

Some people with Restless leg syndrome never seek medical attention because they worry they won't be taken seriously. But Restless leg syndrome can interfere with your sleep, cause daytime drowsiness, affect your quality of life and even cause anxiety and depression this is why its so important to Talk with a healthcare professional if you think you may have Restless leg syndrome.

Hi everyone. It's 06:15am 🇬🇧 and I haven't slept a darn wink all night because of RLS. My legs just won't relax. I've got out of bed several times and walked around in my bare feet but that hasn't helped at all. Back in my bed now and using a support cushion to elevate my legs to see if that will do the trick. I am so tired, yawn yawn!

I sometimes sleep early but I wake up from my legs from twitching as if you caught a fish from the water and is going crazy! As I’m typing this now I’m feeling extreme pain in my legs and I believe this is the first time I notice the pain in my legs it’s currently 3:34am and can’t sleep! 😩

RLS is also caused by iron deficiency. I’m very surprised he never mentioned this

My RLS feels like ocean waves that come and go on a horrible cycle about 15 minutes after laying down for bed. At first I'm tired and can almost fall asleep, but then the waves begin. It's a feeling of this weird sensation of wanting to jump out of my body like some electrical nerve shock that gets stronger, then backs down. Moving my legs, tossing and turning seem to help temporarily, but the waves never stop. I usually have to get up and go eat something and walk around for a while to make it stop. It's a horrible feeling for those who suffer from this and I have for over three decades. I'm perfectly fine all day. It's only when I go to bed. The ONLY time I slept still like a baby is when I had Vicodin on hand due to a cyst removal on my back for pain. It was wonderful, but they can't prescribe Vicodin for RLS because it's a narcotic. But hey, it worked! Yet, they'd rather have people suffer all their lives. Go figure.

I've had severe RLS for 25 years plus. Have lots and lots of advice. Biggest piece of advice. Never allow over-tired, go to bed early at a consistent and regular bedtime. If meds, pre-medicate to sync w bedtime.

An excellent video Abraham, many thanks indeed. I used to suffer from RLS a lot about 15 - 35 years ago, the only thing that helped was: Slightly bending whichever leg was affected, gently lift the opposite leg then pushing all my weight onto the RSL leg and gently bending it repeatedly for about 3-5 minutes. A little like stretching the affected leg I suppose.
That always works for me. A few months ago I had the same problem in my R arm while I was in bed. I used the same way to stop it: Push the outstretched arm hard against the wall, then gently bend it repeatedly 3-5 minutes. It really does work.
Very many thanks Abraham, and as I always say….you’re a 💎

I have tried everything, including all the super duper things mentioned in this video and none of them come close to solving the problem for me. Sometimes, my RLS generalizes to my whole body. It is so bad at times that I feel I would do just about anything to get out of my body. It is far beyond an annoyance. I take pramipexole. If I miss taking a pill at the right time, the suffering sets in until the medication kicks in. That means I will be pacing the floor. No sleep. Sometimes for hours. An additional issue with the medication is that it causes insomnia. Initially, it puts me to sleep. Then it wakes me up. Also, once you start taking it you have to continue or go through a massive dangerous withdrawal or a slow uncomfortable taper down, and you have to up you dose over time to get the same relief. My doctors don't help much. They just tell me that RLS is not well understood. I also have degenerated discs in my lower back and neck and ADHD, which likely aggravate the issue. The name of the syndrome makes it sound so minor. It is anything but minor.

RLS impacts me day and night and is getting worse as I get older. My quality of life is so bad I've honestly considered ending it because I can't stand it anymore. My doctor is less than useless, he has prescribed me a dopamine agonist but it's never helped and he refuses to prescribe the other drugs than are recommended because they can be abused. I don't know what to do.

sometimes i punch my leg because it makes me so mad lol

Stimulants actually help me, but it really depends on the type of RLS you suffer from.

There's a few mechanisms. From what I Geneve, the most common one is dopamine deficiency, or a problem with its uptake/transfer? (Not a doctor, just a sufferer). But there are at least two more leading to lack of oxygen in muscles.

Be careful when suggesting sleep to rls sufferers, you might get a sore nose...
