If you ask any teenager who’s just started working out what their biggest aspiration is, its probably to bench 225lbs or about 100 kilos.
And I’m not talking about dive-bombing the rep and then thrusting your ass up off the bench to bullsh*t the weight up.
I’m talking about controlling the weight, lowering it to your chest, and pressing it to lockout.
Something about benching two big plates on either side of the bar is a rite of passage for every new lifter.
As someone who couldn’t bench 1 plate when I started out, here are some practical tips on how to increase your bench.
Number 1 Don’t skip your upper body volume. Do you curls, your tricep pushdowns, your lat pulldowns, and your rows. Part of benching more is just about having a more muscular upper body.
Number 2 Don’t be afraid to gain some weight. Eating a high-protein diet will help you build muscle.
And number 3 Just bench more often. You can bench 2 or 3 times a week. Just make sure you only go heavy once a week.
And before you know it, 2 plates will probably feel relatively easy.
