Yes it does!!! It took me over 50 years to figure it out. My only suggestion is to get one with a metal handle cuz at some point the plastic handle that you turn WILL SNAP off! Leaving me with one resolution at that moment in time. I took my girl hammer and used the claws to pound several holes around the lid as close together as I could until I could then use the same girl hammer and the same claw end to pry the lid open enough to dump out the contents

Look at an automatic can opener. It does the inside. You've been doing it right all along. The side opener puts the label in your food.

Always take the paper off around the rim first. Will save you a lot of can openers over the years!
