How to become a CBT Therapist?

This video is an explanation of how I became a CBT therapist, I touch on some of the other routes but I hope it will help those of you wondering about this career or just those who are curious.

All views are my own.

Excellent video with a precise trajectory. As someone who has finished my undergrad in Psychology and is now building up my experience in a mental health setting, it sometimes becomes confusing (with lots of contradicting information) on how to become a CBT Therapist. This video has made it a lot clearer though. :) Thank you very much. Also, do you have LinkedIn?

You sound so soft and lovely 🥰
I wanted to ask if the pathways mentioned in the video are same for international students?
Can international students who come for their masters there eventually practice independently? Or is it limited to the UK residents only?

Hello, thank you very much for the video. I have one question, and I'd appreciate your reply. Rather than taking university courses and getting a Trainee PWP role, is there any way to get CBT training with BPS accreditation in the UK? Because, when I look at the BPS website the only options I get are universities. Thank you so much!!

there’s quite a couple of diffrent unis on BABCP website for level 2 accredition, they’re all at diff levels msc/diploma etc. will every single one of the unis allow you to become qualified as a CBT THERAPIST (on the website) ? thanks

How much experience do you need while working in the mental health services before you can apply for the masters?

As well your qualification being accredited by BABCP, do you have to be registered with UKCP ? Also is CBT psychotherapy or psychology based? Confused. Thank you for a really good explanation.

Hi Kelly, very detailed video 👏🏽 I just want to ask I’m a psychology graduate with six months work experience in hospital as psychology intern and one year as HCA in England, as an international student looking for an affordable CBT Diploma not too expensive. Do you know any universities?
Thanks in advance ❤

I’m currently in my final year at university studying Psychology, I’ve been volunteering at a recovery service mainly looking into mental health aspects of the service (possibly might go to another charity). I was going to go apply for an IAPT low intensity role after I have graduated, but I was wondering if you knew how much experience would be expected from me? I have 3 months experience at one mental health charity and another 2 months experience at my current charity.

That's such an insightful video.. i was getting really confused as i want to do pgdip in CBT from the UK but can you please help me to understand in what all areas we are allowed to practice as a CBT therapist and what are the limitations.

Please note i have a keen interest to practice with clinical population, already completed masters in clinical psychology and PGDip in Rehabilitation psychology from India.

hi I just finished my msc in psychology conversion and will be registering under bps plus i am already registered under sssc. i have two years experience working as a support worker for mental health and learning disabilities. i am just wondering how competitive is it when applying for a course. i am thinking of applying through core profession.

Unfortunately, my GCSE science grades didn’t allow me to take any core sciences or psychology. However, I did choose Sociology. Will a social work degree at uni be the best choice for my situation when wanting to become a CBT therapist? Would I get the same experience and knowledge from it so I can still pursue the career? Or will I become disadvantaged for not taking a more mental well-being related degree? If so is Uni worth going or should I start researching in apprenticeship???

Personally (I’m a computer scientist) I think anybody entering the world of psychology /psychoanalysis /psychotherapy /psychiatry (and anything that begins psy) must have a University degree and a masters as a minimum. A doctorate will be helpful in psychoanalysis, fir example. I will not allow anybody to become a therapist, councillor etc by just attending some training (even if it is for 2 years).

More and more people around the world are changing careers from law or social work or whatever domain and retraining for a couple of years and then calling themselves therapists.

It is not aimed at this video. It’s just my observation as someone who has nothing to do with this field. Also, we need more men in the psy world.
