I know I'm beating this topic to death, but here is clear proof that the Super Duty frame is strong but designed to flex when needed. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

people may argue over ford or Chevy but being alive is better than worrying about the truck

After a crash like that I don't want the truck back

If this happens to my truck, I'm not gonna be concerned about the bed touching the cab, I'm gonna be worried about how I'm gonna get back and forth to work everyday

what you want them so strong that they don't crush? the reason is to absorb the impact and not transfer the g force to occupants.watch the dummies in those crashes on the fords they travel further in to the air bags then the others.if your in a wreck like this you wont be driving the truck again let them crumble and take the force away from the people.

if you get in a wreck like this I think the bed hitting the cab is the least of your worries

This is an inconclusive test. The Gm Frame and Ram frame are doing what the are supposed to in this type of accident.

fully boxed is designed for torsional strength, not crash strength.

who tf care if it touchs the back of the cabin its not like you going to be driving that truck

I personally don't understand how you can't see all of the beds touching the cabs.

yup that's the first thing that I would look for after an accident. crawl out of the wreckage and think damn! the bed of my truck is touching the cab!

What is this supposed to prove? Certainly nothing from a safety standpoint. The full-on frontal impact is something that just about every truck sold today aces, it's extremely easy to pass. The brands frame comparisons are all hyperbole. Most big, commercial trucks use C-channel and it obviously flexes. All three brands have their advantages and disadvantages but the truth is if you buy a new full size today, you're getting a damn fine truck, period. Anyone who wants to argue that and thump their chest about one brand over another is just an idiot fanboy.

My train of thought is I wouldn't my frame super stiff in an accident. I want some deflection to help absorb the G forces.

The Ford frame does flex, it flexes so much that it flexes back. Where on the Chevy and Ram yes they flex, but because they are so stiff they stay bent. Now it's interesting when all the same trucks are tested on opposed ramps to test suspension flex and frame flex the Chevy frame and Ram frames do not flex at all, but the Ford flexes so much the bed will damage the cab where they touch rather hard, the tailgate gets damaged and can no longer be opened either on only the Ford. But also note the new 2017 Ford SD will have a fully boxed frame!!!

A boxed frame adds about 1/3rd more weight. So, to keep the same weight, you need to go thinner (in width of rail or metal). I'm a carpenter, so think of it like this, vertical load only, what takes more weight, a 2x8 or 4x4? So, when you load a 3/4 ton with almost 10yds of chip, what do you want? 2x8 rails or 4x4? Also, think about it, that frame flex helps articulation. If those were 2WD or open/LSD diffs, you want articulation to maintain traction. In closing, you want a curb hopper that won't spill your PSL (Pumpkin Spiced Latte), get the boxed frame, you want to haul 4, 000-5, 000lbs of fresh chip in a 3/4 ton pickup, use a Ford.

I would much rather have frame " deflection " in the event of an accident it bends so you don't have to lol. Energy absorption. plus steel that bends has less chance of cracking/breaking.

The trucks are going to be totaled any way so what does the frame bending matter??

why even bother trying to prove this point the insurance company will still call it totaled

2017 superduty brags about a all new fully boxed frame now. Time to smash it into the wall and see what happens.

i think you are looking at this wrong, Ford could have built their impact zone to absorb all of the impact from a crash, and Chev/Dodge knowing they had a box frame may have designed their impact zone to transfer the energy into the frame(making it twist)

“Permanent frame damage after this type of accident”
...because that’s all you have to worry about.
