The huge difference between Boeing and SpaceX is that SpaceX does NOT have a DEI program, instead focusing on competence and excellence.

First 7 years of my career was with a defense contractor, subcontracted to BOEING. I never got the joke about a hammer costing $10k until I started working under government contracts. It's all a massive swindle where you keep 'pumping the water well' for more money and never delivering anything. BOEING failing to deliver on their 'timelines' is pretty much one of their 'core values'.

Yeah, this is the same Boeing that had the 737-Max debacle. They were also behind killing Concorde - just think, if they hadn't, by now, we'd all be flying to our destination "supersonic". Glad they decided an outcome that puts the astronauts first and "image" second. Pretty sure that's what cost two space shuttles and crews.

Your title seems incorrect. NASA doesn't order SpaceX. They can order their astronauts to wait for rescue, and decide Starliner will return uncrewed, since it is taking up valuable dock space at ISS. They can ask nicely and pay dearly to have Crew Dragon return their stranded astronauts.
