NASA Finally Orders SpaceX Dragon For Safe Starliner's Astronauts Return....
Eight days, 45 days, nearly two months… Starliner still hasn’t returned. it encountered a series of technical issues that even industry experts seem unsure how to resolve. No one knows how to get the astronauts back.
Finally, NASA realized they really needed a backup plan to rescue their astronauts. That’s when SpaceX’s Dragon is considered a lifebelt.
So, what led NASA to this aggressive decision, and how will Dragon rescue the astronauts who flew on Starliner?
Let’s find out on today’s episode
NASA Finally Orders SpaceX Dragon For Safe Starliner's Astronauts Return...
NASA and Boeing have planned to use the Starliner spacecraft to regularly transport astronauts to and from the International Space Station (ISS) as a second vehicle. However, before they can commence commercial flights, they must conduct numerous test flights to ensure absolute safety. That’s why the Starliner’s first crew flight test is crucial. In the field of space travel, where technical issues—and even serious accidents—can pose life-threatening risks, this step is indispensable.
NASA Finally Orders SpaceX Dragon For Safe Starliner's Astronauts Return...
Ironically, the Starliner seems to be following a problematic path. A series of technical issues have emerged, causing the Starliner and its crew's stay at the ISS to extend longer and longer. To date, it's been nearly two months.
So, when will the Starliner and its astronauts return? Not a single soul out there knows the answer. The silence from Boeing and NASA subtly hints at their uncertainty about the Starliner’s reliability.
In the aerospace industry, what isn’t said often matters as much as what is publicly announced. Therefore, you have to pay attention to what NASA isn’t saying. Behind closed doors, there are likely some really unpleasant conversations happening.
And what is meant to happen, will happen. On July 15, NASA awarded SpaceX $266,678 under the Commercial Crew contract for a "Special Study for Emergency Response”. This move clearly shows just how deeply worried they are.

"If its Boeing, I ain't going"

I spent 20+ years as a Test Engineer at a company that supplies space-qualified components whose failure would be catastrophic. This is inexcusable.

There is no substitute for good workmanship.

Boeing used to be a premier tech company. Then they merged with McDonnell and became a Wall Street company instead of a tech company. Cut corners for fun and profit and more profit.

Doubtful Boeing can "reclaim it lost reputation". Bean counter don't consider "reputation" in their calculations. Since Boeing has dramatically cut their quality control staff and replaced them with computer simulations, things have steadily gone downhill for its aero and space endeavors/products. Boeing would be best serve to ramp up quality control, higher engineers to run the company and get rid of the bean counters.

Boeing: "we need to cut corners to maximize profits for our shareholders!"

If Boeing is this nonchalant with their testing of a multi billion dollar spaceship. Makes you wonder what they are doing to their Commercial Aircraft Manufacturing Division.

This is what happens when you have Bean Counting Bookkeepers in charge of Engineering Programs... I Bet you the Bean Counters in charge Vetoed the appropriate tests the Engineers wanted to do. This will continue to happen to both the Air and Space Departments until an Engineer takes back Control of Boeing. At least this time Hundreds of Passengers have not Died because Accountants are in Charge of Boeing.

I bet SpaceX could launch a Dragon within a week.
The big question is the suits. I doubt that the Starliner suits would work on Dragon. Can they fit a new Dragon suit using only the measurements of the astronauts. I bet they normally need the person in question for tailoring.

Why don't they have SpaceX go get them?

I've been retired since 2016 (not from Boeing). Ironic that I recently got a LinkedIn message from a recruiter informing me of a Boeing job fair they wanted to invite me to. Man these people are desperate. 😁

Boeing's corner cutting spells doom for Boeing.

They need to take lessons from Space X on how to test and improve the craft Before Risking Lives.

I think the Space Force should have emergency rescue in it's mandate. It can be like an Earthly fire and rescue department. Create a Space Force Emergency Rescue Department. When an Earthly mission from anywhere on the planet and any country launches into space, they can coordinate with the US Space Force Emergency Rescue for a fee. It can be done using an annual insurance fee paid by countries and commercial organizations. This system will make it affordable to maintain 24/7 resources to maintain and launch emergency spacecraft and crew.

It's been several days since the question was posed, SpaceX is not Boeing and likely is only waiting for the word to go.

‘The Angry Astronaut’ quoted sources saying that Starliner was never loaded with the necessary software to remotely undock & return on its own. Any uploading of untested software could result in catastrophic loss of ISS itself should those troubled thrust control valves fail and no human is onboard to prevent disaster!

NASA & Boeing have so F’d this up that it may be best to sacrifice two astronauts attempting to return on Starliner manually in order to save even more astronauts on the station!

Is that Starliner Max. Boeing should refund the 4.62 billion dollars they got paid in advance. Bring Suni and Butch home on Spacex.
