When he wanted to go to delta he just needed to be in the Army.. active, guard or reserves. So he joined some local bullshit reserve unit and immediately dropped his packet and went to selection. He earned his long tab years later when the unit sent him to the Q course.

Delta pulls from all branches. So that’s not surprising in the slightest.

Imagine being 30 years old, already retired from devgru and you still have to become delta 😮. Wild!

The unit actively recruits from the teams regularly but once you get to DEVGRU it is unlikely because at that point you are often already at your pinnacle and ready for retirement. Just to make DEVGRU you can't just be SEAL qualified you usually need and at least a deployment, often many before you are proven for DEVGRU.

He retired from team 6. After 911 he wanted back in and they wanted him to go to a regular seal team. Instead he went to selection for delta and went straight to the unit. He's single handedly responsible for guys carrying tomahawks to war. The design is seen in The Terminal List series by Jack Carr.

In 1975 I completed the SFOQC at Fort Bragg and was assigned as a CPT to 1st Bn 10th Special Forces Group (A) Bad Tolz, Germany. Charlie Beckwith was my CO and mentor. We together next went to the stand-up of 1st Special Operations Command (A). He next assigned me to COL Bob Mountel “Blue Light Team” at 5th SF Group, as he stood up SFOD-Delta. Next he brought me along for the stand up of JSOC. My final assignment as a MAJ was to COL Jerry King at Fort Belvoir. The Army of Northern Virginia. The USAISA. “The Activity” is the premier Tier 1 Clandestine unit. I’ve met General’s who don’t recognize my Beret Flash or know of my unit.
