Stink bugs are annoying pests that give off a foul odor when threatened or crushed, but over winter, they’ll also infest the cracks and crevices of your exterior, and by spring, potentially turn your interior into a stink bug minefield. It’s essential to get rid of stink bugs without crushing them, so in this video, we’ll show you how to spot stink bug activity, treat them, and prevent infestations from happening again.

The most common stink bug is the brown marmorated stink bug. Stink bugs grow to be up to 17 mm in length. Their bodies are shaped like stout shields, and they are mostly brown with a mottled pattern.

Start by inspecting the outer perimeter of your structure. Overwintering pests can use features like vents or chimneys to access to our homes. They can also use openings found along walls, among door seals, window frames, utility openings, and cracks within the foundation. Also, note any damaged or missing window screens. Indoors, you’re looking for pest activity. Overwintering pests will cluster together around heat sources or hide in enclosed cracks and crevices.

Before starting treatment, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE, especially when you handle any chemicals.

Begin treatment with Reclaim IT. Reclaim IT is a liquid repellent insecticide concentrate that’s labeled to control over 70 different pests and offers a residual of up to 90 days. Since we're using Reclaim IT as a perimeter treatment, use 1 ounce of Reclaim per gallon of water per 1,000 square feet. Using a pump sprayer, add your water, add Reclaim, shake the solution, and you're ready to start.

Create a barrier around the structure of your home by spraying 3 feet up the structure and 3 feet out. Next, spray areas around windows, doors, eaves, air vents, plumbing, garage doors, light fixtures, basement or crawl space openings, and any other openings you may have found.

Next, start your indoor treatment with Pyrid. Pyrid is an insecticide aerosol that delivers a quick knockdown, but has no residual. Apply Pyrid where you've seen pest activity. To apply Pyrid to a broad area, like around a window or along a doorway, make sure the white applicator is attached, shake the can, and spray in swift, sweeping motions. In order to apply Pyrid to cracks or crevices, use the supplied red applicator. Simply remove the white applicator, place the red one, and make sure the straw is affixed in the spout. Stick the applicator in the crevice, and spray in a swift motion along the crevice's length.

Round out your treatment with D-Fense Dust. D-Fense Dust is a ready-to-use insecticidal dust that if left undisturbed, can last for up to 8 months. Use a dust applicator to apply dust in hard to reach areas, like underneath appliances, in wall voids, and in crevices.

You can stop stink bugs from entering your home by keeping up with pesticide treatments and addressing the entry points you found during your inspection. Close up small entry points outside of your structure with copper mesh and caulk. Repair damaged screens and door seals. Trim back vegetation, including any overhanging branches from nearby trees.
Finally, be sure to apply Reclaim IT every 90 days for guaranteed control.

I have an overactive sense of smell and cannot smell these guys. We just moved into a house that seems to have a lot; we only had a couple in the past. Thank you so much for the information.

Tip I have found out over the past year dealing with these. If you have a can of compressed air, turn it upside down and spray the stink bug. The instant cold shocks them and they collapse and can't move. Makes for easy disposal and no harmful residue.

We recently moved to a cabin in the mountains from a state that didn't have any major issues with these filthy things.. Unbeknownst to us, we had our windows & doors open to enjoy the fall weather, and ignorantly created a stink bug expressway right into our home. I've found them in our BED, pillowcases, clothes & don't even ask about the nightmarish hoardes in our curtains. Needless to say, these filthy, stinking bastards have terrorized me in my own home. We've managed to eliminate most of them inside but everyday there's hundreds more on our windows & doors trying to get in and insecticides haven't fazed them.. so definitely going to try this one out though because I'm desperate to eradicate these things.
Does this onslaught continue ALL fall/winter or will we eventually see them move on at some point since we've sealed off possible access points? I despise these little demon bastards with a passion.. I'm convinced they had to be spawned straight from Satan's asscrack. 🤬

These disgusting bugs always dive bomb me. I never knew why they were called stink bugs until I kept smelling this weird odor after one landed on me.

Heard something clicking next to me in my bed and saw this thing in the corner of my eye less then a foot away from me. Ejected myself out of my bed. I don’t want to get back in.

We never had them until the winters became warmer in recent years. It seems they've replaced the boxelder bugs that used to appear by the thousands in the fall. Japanese Beetles have also become a destructive nuisance since the winters became milder. They begin to damage our fragrant flowers in early July, especially the roses.

I grabbed a few with tissue paper/paper towel b4 I knew about the “stink”. Grab them with baby-wipes layered in the paper towel and the stink wont penetrate to hand if you accidentally crush them on the way to the garbage. The “lotion” on the baby-wipes also seems to suffocate them if wrapped well enough 😁👍

In the fall they appear like clockwork and by winter (like literally mid December) they disappear like clockwork as well. They don't seem to harm anything, or roam much - in fact had I not approved my window idk how long it would've taken me to discover them. They are loud and unacceptable, I don't notice any smells when I crus them so I did, often. However I've moved to repair all my entry spots this year - all windows and doors repaired/replaced, and where that couldn't be done I'm using wintering tape. Wish me luck.
