Here's some tips I've gathered over the years:

1. Wash your used flower pots with soap. You don't want to contaminate new soil.

2. Place 1-3 plants per one flower pot. Basil needs a lot of space to grow.

3. Cut off the top of the stems just below a pair of growing leaves so it can branch out.

4. Allow the basil plant to grow and branch out before harvesting.

5. DO NOT harvest by taking off individual leaves (it damages the plant). Rather, cut off a few bigger long stems with lots of leaves. That way the basil keeps growing infinitely.

6. If you see a flower forming, cut that shit off.

7. Basil needs a lot of water. Once it becomes dry, the leaves will be soft and droopy so don't forget to check if the soil is dry. On hot days, I need to water it almost every single day.

8. If you have tiny flies around your plant, those are most likely to be mold gnats. They lay eggs on the surface of your plant because it's moist. Either, let the soil completely dry and water your plants by soaking them. Or just buy nematodes against mold gnats (It's cheap and will take care of the problem fast).

9. If you have any leaves that fell off on the surface of the soil, remove them because it will lead to mold.

From my experience, don't plant one basil per plant. They are friendship plants, they prefer to be paired up. I always plant 2 together 👌

One time I had a basil plant stay alive for over a year, it was an absolute unit, at the end the stem was like wood. I should try to do that again, it was fun.

Her hugging the basil is actually quite wholesome, it's cool that some people like taking care of their plants like that

Another tip I've learned is to never water it from above. Instead, let it sit in a dish where it can suck the water up from below. This will help prevent mold growth in the soil.

Perfect timing seeing this video. I just bought two pots of jam packed basil. After watching I already seperated the first pot into about 7 different planted areas around the garden. Now I'm excited for lots of basil this summer!

I did not realize that Basil could be so pretty, too
The colour gradient is so nice

Nicely done! I created a basil stock pile through the same method, I just never had my basil grow that tall. Freaking amazing.

Another tip for fungus gnats, bottom watering the plant so the top inch or two is never wet, making a perfect home for them to lay eggs. And dress the top of the soil with Diatomaceous Earth as it makes the soil inhospitable and will dry out any legs or larvae already present. DE is completely safe for humans and our pets 🙂

Pruning the tops is a great tip, it forces the plant to grow sideways. That's how they made tea bushes waist-high, instead of growing taller!

I often just loosened the roots and planted them in a much bigger pot, often with another basil, I just make sure to remove dying stems completely and to give the plants at least 4-5x as much soil as their original size. Also they love water as long as you don't drown them. The right trimming is basically always doing the heavy lifting. But yeah I recommend for a tighter budget (in the city where I'm at you need to buy soil and it's not cheap) you don't really need to separate it just loosened the roots a lot, remove dying stems, and give it some space to grow

Also I prefer most of my herbs to be a lot smaller but bushier I feel they're healthier that way

Aww this is so helpful!! It also made me realize why my store bought plants die so often. They are ALWAYS over crowded :(
Good to know for next summer though, when I buy more plants!

My parents had gardens growing up (still do) and i LOVED basil. They would plant the basil in a big planter with the tomatoes and i would take care of them and they would grow huge like that

Guys this is the same with potted flowers too! ❤ If you separate them, you will have those flowers for years and years

Also if you go to a horticulturist there is a kind of basel thats a little more robust and its very easy to make cutti gs from it.
(Its also normaly gown much slower so that makes it even sturdier)
