Why I Decided to Become a Baha'i | Jessica Kemejuk

Jessica Kemejuk—actress, spiritual seeker, and new Baha’i—grew up in Los Angeles, where she suffered from bullying and racism because of her mixed-race, half-Japanese and half-Russian ethnicity. In a journey to find someplace where she would be accepted for her whole self, she encountered and tried on many spiritual modalities, until she met a Baha'i. Then, she says, for her the Baha'i writings and prayers “resonated in this place that only truth does.” She witnessed the vibrancy, honesty and clarity of the Baha'i community, and decided to become a follower of Baha’u’llah. I was born into a Bahai family in the early 60s in Tehran, Iran. Life was not easy growing up as a young Bahai. School years were beyond difficult. It was sad to see so much prejudice, anger and hate from my fellow Iranian schoolmates and teachers. One of the tenets of the Bahai Faith is the elimination of all prejudices. I feel no resentment against those who inflicted beatings, threats and verbal abuse towards me and pray that they may try to love one another and independently investigate the Bahai Faith. Then, if it doesn’t work, we can always go back to our old ways.

There is a lot of aspects to being a Baha’i, but there is no pressure to do everything. Each person gets to share their best gifts. Mine are art and prayer. Others are leadership of a group or community service. None should feel pressured to do more than they can, because you have a lifetime. I made my own initiative and proved to myself the truth of all my learning. Prayer opens your heart, and these prayers are the greatest poetic expression on earth.

Fantastic Jessica!!!! You express the essence of Bahá'í SO well. I became a Bahá'í in Ireland 35 years ago but it's lovely to listen to you, to be reminded of the essence of our wonderfull Faith. I lived in LA for 5 year so I know many of those wonderful "Kindest Vampires" that you have met. They are indeed a powerful group of beautiful, loving, inspired people. I miss them so much.
