The whammy bar lets you lower/raise the string tension to decrease/increase pitch, either to create a tremolo effect or, in Vai's case, to have the guitar go completely mental.

Everyone: nuts seeing Steve Vai play.
Classical composer, “I wonder if the G chord will return”

The applause when the crowd heard the Oboe, was because the audience inmediately recogniced wich song it was.

'Ooh, this is soulful for a virtuoso'
* Vai grabs the trem and shakes the crap out of the guitar*

Just an FYI, but Steve orchestrated that himself. The crowd cheered when the oboe came in because that was when they recognized the song.

Steve Vai is a composer himself, so his knowledge of theory and composition is reflected a lot in his songs.

I was there with my wife and 12 year old son at the time, it was magical, esp. His one note lasting for 12 min and the Orchestra playing, Steve wrote that piece, magical evening and my son got to meet and talk to Steve, great talk, he was so nice to him, signed his guitar and said, " keep practicing and just have fun doin it, Explore and find yourself and your sound"
He is now 23 and has become a great player.
Steve Vai, great human being he is.

12:25 Stevie Vai playing his guts out. Maestro: 'oh, it's just an E minor chord'.

Steve Vai studied under Joe Satriani, a while later he then did an audition for Frank Zappa.. When Steve arrived for the audition, Frank Zappa gave him the complete score of 'exactly; what he wanted Steve to play.. Steve sight read it and nailed it.. if you can pass the test of Frank Zappa, you are on your way to virtuosity..

The applause when the crowd heard the Oboe was because Oboe plays the most recognizable and most emotional intro in guitar instrumental history!

....so the Therapist asked his Guitar, "Where, Exactly did he Touch you?"
*Guitar says, "EVERYWHERE!!!!"

A normal guitar player’s whammy bar bends the pitch of the strings, Steve Vai’s does magic.

Apart from his skill he is by far the nicest and most genuine performer I have ever seen. So humble too. He sponsors young guitar players.

I love how this guy is explaining what’s going on here. Interesting watching a composer describe what another composer was doing. Btw, at 12:39 Steve is blowing on the strings not to change the sound, but vibrate the strings because he’s using a “ Fernandez sustainer pickup“, which acts like a violin bow by vibrating the string magnetically. I use an #Ebow on my guitar on stage, which does the same thing, vibrates the string magnetically, so it is imitating a violin or cello bow.

The recorded version is only about 5 minutes long. Like others in the thread, I don't think this is the best version of this song. What I love about the original is that he comes straight in on that oboe melody and plays it 'straight' all the way through once, then messes around with increasingly intense variations on that for five minutes. Which is why the crowd goes nuts when it comes in - they recognise the main melody of the song. But I think having it played that way the first time completely takes away the effect.

They didn't applause because the Oboe started playing, they applauded because that was the beginning of the Song (originally played by the guitar)

There's a deep story behind the studio version. He fasted and then played til his fingers bled on the track. Steve is my favorite guitarist alive right now.

As others have mentioned, this isn’t the best interpretation of this song... I dare to say that the one in the G3 1996 is the best!

Hearing a classically trained musician analyzing (with no bias) rock music is extremely … useful, beneficial, what else… thanks a lot for this channel!
