#yes #90125 #yesreaction

In this #masterpiecefriday edition of #thedailydoug, I'm reacting to the first four songs from 90125 by Yes. This, their 11th studio album from 1983, produced the band's only #1 hit with Owner of a Lonely Heart. I've heard that one previously, but the other three songs included in this reaction: Hold On, It Can Happen, and Changes are all first-time listens. I hope you enjoy!

Prog Pop at its finest, not a bad song on it. This LP made Yes mainstream to the masses of a newer generation of listeners and opened up curiosity to the rest of their catalog of music.

Dude, those horn stabs are half of what make "Owner of a Lonely Heart" so much fun to listen to.

Can't wait until Side 2 with Leave It. I almost hope Doug listens to the A Cappella version. Amazing.

All us Yes fans thought the band was over after Drama. It was with a huge sigh of relief, and feelings of joy, that I heard 90125 for the first time. It was different, but it was now the 80's and that era's technology influenced the sound of the album. As I was now living in South Africa I was thrilled that Trevor Rabin had met Chris and was now contributing to Yes as I was familiar with his work and knew it would be good. It was!

Without a doubt one of the best LP’s ever released. Every track is a masterpiece reaching a crescendo with Hearts.

'Changes' is the real gem of this album, and that's saying a lot...

One of the best 80s albums and an amazing prog rock/pop record released in the era of MTV video stars. This record changed my musical outlook.

It Can Happen hits a spot in my heart like no other. Those bass dives sound like a big rock being thrown into a deep pool of water.

90125 is absolutely one of the albums that defined the 1980's.

Forget any naysayers. This is a great album. Yes, this is a change, but still Yes as far as I’m concerned. I’d call it prog/pop. And I love the hard hitting of Alan White (RIP along with Chris).

It's my favorite Yes album and one of my all time favorite albums of any kind.

This is one of my all-time favorites and has aged extremely well. The CD revolution was beginning when this was released and when you wanted to show off your system, this was what you put on! It still sounds amazing. A cinematic experience listening to it and it has a spiritual quality to it as well, especially the last few tracks. Very uplifting messages as well in the lyrics. Incredible production, a masterpiece that they were unable to ever replicate. A desert island record pick if there ever was one!

The cinematography of the long form video of Owner is so incredibly well done all through. And it plays so hard into the synth pops with disturbing images as the music is also jarring, displaying the character's psychological unraveling. And then the uplifting key change at the very end with the image of him turning to walk against the crowd. Just absolutely perfect.

15:51 - "It's Gentle Giant!" OMG! 🤣 That's the greatest statement ever. I love you Doug.

Loved this album. Several members teamed up a couple of years later as “Anderson, Buford, Wakeman, and Howe” and produced a great album that has a similar and somewhat more sophisticated sound to that found on this album. Amazing work.

A good companion album to listen to here in the 70s prog to 80s transformation would be Genesis's "ABACAB" .

It Can Happen is one of those rare songs that I just love to hear and I never get tired of it. I've been listening to this album since it came out and I still love it and I love all YES. If I never hear Roundabout again, that is fine. Heard it too much. But I never get bored of this.

This was Yes's move to stay relevant in the early 80's, to some degree, with a more commercial sound and approach. But still such as amazing album in the day. I think I listened to the full album every day for a year. A touchstone album then and remains one now.
