I’m 57. Can still recite these lyrics word for word without a gap. But I can’t remember what I went to the kitchen for 30 seconds after walking out of the bedroom 😜

That final part could go on for another 20 minutes with the same chord progression and I would never get tired. It's magical.

These guys were all 22 and younger when they pulled this off. Good God.

My dad pretty much forced me to listen to this song lying in my bed, alone in the dark when I was 13 and was listening to Scorpions and Queen all day long.
He told me, you think you listen to great music ? Well, you are, but go to your bedroom, turn off the light, be back in 40 minutes, then we will talk.

25 years later I'm still mind blown by this masterpiece.

As a sixteen year I booked Genesis to play at my youth club in Derbyshire.... And they came. Can you imagine that? The hall was packed with over three hundred people and they left us all mesmorized. They were the days.

Selling England By The Pound is one of the very best Prog Rock albums ever. Go for it.

I was an 80’s kid and loved the Phil Collins version of Genesis. Then one day I picked up an old vinyl album of the early Peter Gabriel Genesis. Mind blown.

Live, Gabriel introduced the song this way:
“After the rain, the worms come out of the ground and, to them, it's time for making love. For the birds, supper's ready”

Twenty-two. That’s how old these incredibly talented and ambitious boys were when this was recorded. That, to me, is the most incredible part of this masterpiece.

In a nutshell, the song is about a couple whom, upon reuniting after having been far apart, begin to experience the environment changing around them. They're brought to a land with two characters; a farmer, and a "Fireman". The fireman isn't just some typical fireman. The word play of the lyrics says that they look after the fire, like a farmer looks after a farm with care for his harvest. The fireman is a magician that deceives the people of the village. This is the Guaranteed Eternal Sanctuary Man who promises eternal life to those who fall for his deception.

Next, he leads them into war by convincing them that fighting their foes will bring peace. The potion in question is likely a product that prevents the warriors from thinking clearly so they just follow their orders to fight. They win the battle, convincing everyone of the greatness of the Sanctuary Man.

We return to the couple who walk across the battlefield to witness all the bodies and destruction. They discover a man named Narcissus who looks into pool (likely of blood) to gaze over his reflection in vanity. He transforms into a flower, moving into Willow Farm, which doesn't necessarily serve much in the song, given it was written as it's own song, so it's just assumed that the couple are transported to another land full of shapeshifters that turn objects into animals and animals into objects. It's a very weird and random piece but is pretty iconic for early Genesis.

After this section, the mood returns to the post-war tone for a somber break before suddenly, the apocalypse begins. The Earth begins to descend in Satan's power. The Pied Piper taking the children underground is the Sanctuary Man, now revealed as Anti-Christ, leading his followers to Hell as Dragons come out of the sea and spread fire among the land. This is all straight out of Revelations. The couple are forced to outrun all of the destruction and Satan's invasion. As the music climaxes, it's assumed that they are being cornered in as the Beast (666) arrives to feast on them. When it seems all hope is lost, a miracle happens. The two become enlightened through their love and are raptured up by the Lord. They return home to meet with Jesus himself who takes them to the Kingdom of Heaven, dubbed New Jerusalem, to join the Supper of the Lord.

Their Supper is Ready.

There is an illustrated animatic version uploaded by Nathaniel Barlem that perfectly details the story along with the full song. I'd definitely suggest checking that out!

In the 70s, I pretty much judged my friends by whether or not they liked Genesis.

Early Genesis has always been my favorite band! Their symphonic music, their lyrics and their fantastic arrangements make them my absolute favorites! Supper's ready is, in my opinion, their absolute most magnificent piece! Everything is here! The musicality! The lyrics! The feeling! I have listened to this song thousands of times and the end with the reference to the Book of Revelation always gives me shivers! That the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, comes down to correct and eradicate all corrupt political, religious, military, financial and "scientific" rulers ... That is what is needed for people to be able to live in peace and freedom.
