I’ve carried a handyman since I was 15, it came with me through 23 1/2 years in the British Army and I still carry it today. It has been so incredibly useful. I’m never without it.

Don't be afraid to disassemble your SAK. It's just a big sandwich. You can take it completely apart and put it back together very easily. You will have to replace the pins. Learning to peen pins is way easier than you imagine.

I have most of the popular Victorinox Swiss Army But the Handyman is my go to 95% of the time. When camping, fishing or the such...I take the Champ!!!!

victorinoxes in the 91mm size seem to always have the two given layers of the two blades and the two openers. when shopping for this class and size i ignore those tools because they are in practically all of the models. the differentiating factor are the middle tools.

in my system the swisschamp can be in a pouch but not as something in your pocket unless you decide to go with a pocket suspension clip carry.
the one you carry depends on what middle tools you need or want. sometimes you end up carrying two that complement each other…like the craftsman with angler or fisherman because one of those has pliers and a scale tool with metric and inches. i use two pliers for electronic work like mini hands.

then, carry one leatherman for heavy duty work like the wave plus, surge, skeletool cx or whaever.

victorinox tends to be for more delicate work and leatherman for everyday rugged use.

the right tool for the job sometimes needs to get over carrying 1 item when you have two pockets, you can carry a better toolset.

also in my system a craftsman complements the swisschamp when you want the breadth of victorinos tools since you have the dual pliers and better dexterity with the smaller one. same when i carry a craftsman and a angler or fisherman… the smaller one is for dexterity and the bigger one is for added backup tool support. if you don’t need much for a secondary, alox models look really cool too.

The Handyman would be perfect if it had the in-line Phillips like the Swisschamp...

I switched from this to a Victorinox Ranger / Leatherman Skeletool combo. The ranger looses the pliers but the skeletool gives you larger pliers, one handed knife, and the Philips bit.

I agree with you about the size of the swisschamp being a little akward in the hand but I still love it. I normally edc my explorer and carry the swisschamp when I think I might need a little more. My next purchase is going to be a compact for summer edc since the explorer is still a little big.

I decided for a handyman too. especially with these plus-scales...and some extra tools: magnet, needle, pen, fireant. I love this tool!

I was also very undecided between handyman and ranger. I wish I had a philips screwdriver, I agree. Swisschamp has become a tool that I have at hand on my desk. It is very heavy and wide on its own. A small pair of pliers is usually enough for me. It does things like holding and pulling something, slightly bending a wire. Even surge is not enough to open a nut or bolt.

But handyman is almost as wide as swisschamp. Sometimes it is necessary to do something with a file or knife while holding something with pliers. For this reason, I decided to have the pliers separately and preferred ranger. It is accompanied by knipex cobra xs.

I work as a maintenance man for 26+ years, I have 2 victorinox knives. Both heavily used. I have the Deluxe Tinkerer which is my real edc, and I have the Work champ which I pick up whenever I'm going to a call out. Both excellent!

Had a Victorinox for over 35 years. Recently got another one (mountineer), but the original still works perfectly. I see Zero reasons to look at other brands. The quality is simply unmatched

I've for a long time said, the handyman with a Phillips driver instead of a cork screw would be an awesome EDC

Bummer Victorinox don’t have a service where you could order a SAK with the toolset you want.

For me the victorinox pliers are nice, but they are the one Swiss army knife tool that adds the most thickness. The swiss champ is much thicker than I prefer from an ergonomic standpoint. The handy man is much better in that realm, but if I really wanted a pair of small pliers I would probably opt for a decent keychain sized pair.. Like you, I have found there are a lot of SAK models that come close to what I would want, but not exactly. My dream SAK is orbited by models like the ranger, handyman, and huntsman lite. All I really want is a ranger that has the inline philips added as a 6th layer. Heck, I'd even take a ranger that has the T philips instead of the corkscrew. The three models I listed above come very close, but not exactly. My favorite amongst them is probably the huntsman lite. It is ergonomic, and all that I'm giving up from my dream knife is the metal file / chisel layer.

You can let Victorinox replace the corkscrew for the philips, at least they did it with my handyman

I'm going to get a Handyman now. I see the need for pliers and as you say, it fits better in the hand than my Swisschamp. I also now and then need a file and my Climber that I am carrying now doesn't have it. THanks for the video!

In practical terms the Handyman is the most useful SAK with all the tools that you will actually use in the 91mm range rather than the overrated Swiss Champ with its various impractical tools that serve no purpose

Deluxe tinker is the tinker model with pliers. Super is the next tinker size down that doesn’t have pliers
