Are Cruciferous Vegetables Bad For Your Thyroid

NUTRITION MYTHOLOGY FACT CHECKING!
Have you heard or read that cruciferous vegetables should be avoided because they are bad for the thyroid, or goitrogens?
At the same time, you hear how cruciferous vegetables have profound benefits for the brain, the heart, and are anti-cancer and more.
So what is the truth? Are they good or bad? Do you have to sacrifice your thyroid to protect the rest of your body? Or has there been some misunderstanding of the science?
You CAN and SHOULD nourish yourself with cruciferous veggies, AND make sure you get your iodine needs met. The results in my clients is that they can reverse Hashimoto's, and usually reduce (and often eliminate) their need for thyroid hormones.
This video should help explain the science behind the mythology and how to maximize the health of your thyroid and your entire body!

Interesting iodine anecdote from my elderly mother:
My mother has been nutritarian vegan for five years now. She was able to get off a dozen daily medications after a couple of years but she still took daily levothyroxine. About 18 months ago, her blood pressure started to go up a bit so she started eating a small chopped kale salad with a bit of balsamic vinegar before lunch and dinner per the recommendation of the Dr. Esselstyn protocol for improved nitric oxide. She also became much more strict with lowering sodium and boosting potassium foods. Next, she added drinking some hibiscus tea to help keep blood pressure lower. Finally, she added eating some raw beet cubes with her twice daily hibiscus tea. About six months ago, she got a cortisone shot in her knee and her blood pressure went up a bit so she started back on a diuretic every other day. A month ago, her TSH was a bit elevated which caused me to recall that Dr. Goldner mentioned that iodine is best supplemented at a time separate from a meal with cruciferous veggies which she eats both lunch and dinner. Dr. Goldner has also noted that 300mcg was an appropriate daily amount of iodine for someone with an underactive thyroid. My mom began to take her multivitamin after breakfast rather than after lunch and she also added some nascent iodine drops to a shot of water before breakfast to increase her daily supplement to about 300mcg. Her blood pressure is now normalizing and she will need to discontinue the diuretic very shortly to avoid overmedication. It amazes me how fine-tuned the body's nutrient requirements can be. I am so thankful for the amazingly helpful advice of Dr. Goldner. Cheers!

What a fantastic rebuttal to plants that block absorption when eaten with other plants.
Eat them at separate times so you get nourished.
Magnificent!

Thank you Dr. G! As a WFPB/Lifestyle medicine health coach/mentor, and future WFPB/Lifestyle medicine physician, you are a huge inspiration and role model for me! We definitely need more docs like you and the others we know and follow- it's key for revolutionizing health care for all people!

As for the info in this video, I've shared with my patients/mentees exactly what you've said here, and also recommend the seaweed/kelp/nori route. Do you prefer this route, or an actual Iodine supplement (usually in drop form), to make sure Iodine levels are adequate? Of course this assumes minimizing sodium intake, although we know that having not much more than ~1500 mg daily of sodium (including from iodized salt), is important to keep hypertension/stroke/CVD/CKD risk low. Your thoughts on all of this?

Hey Brooke, first love your love for our health. It's so awesome! In this video you talk bout broccoli is cancer killing, but I paused the video and read that it are actually 3 days old brocolli sprouts that are so powerful and not the broccoli. What are your thoughts on this, because you teach us to eat the brocolli heads. Should we use the brocolli sprouts instead of the heads?

Thank you, Dr. Brooke Goldner. I have been on your protocol for six weeks now I have Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism and I have been adding dose for iodine to my smoothies, which include cruciferous. Would you recommend I take it separately or is it OK to continue to keep it in the smoothiethank you again I’m so grateful for all you do for so many

Is a 50/50 mix of spinach & kale good enough to blend and drink daily or is 100% kale way better? I find all kale rough in taste and it’s high fiber to get down

I was diagnosed HYPERthyroid. I did a Iodine load test and I am low on Iodine. In this video you said HYPOthyroid needs to supplement with iodine. What about a HYPERthyroid person?

Just curious about nascent iodine… I can’t seem to figure out how much is actually in one drop. I think the recommended dose on the bottle is three drops. But it seems like it’s saying it’s up in the thousands… How much iodine should one take to get either the 150 or 300 do Dr. Goldner is recommending?
Thank you, thank you! I just love her!
