Japan's Epsilon-6 rocket has self-destructed after a failure in launch operations.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency reportedly sent through the self-destruct command seven minutes after takeoff - when it was determined the rocket would not be able to fly safely.

Officials say the rocket was carrying at least eight satellites intended for orbit.
