Exercises for Post Bunion Surgery

Exercising your foot after bunion surgery for the many weeks following surgery is a key element to healing. It will help you to gain back your range of motion in your foot.

I'll show you the exercises given to me by my doctor and by my physical therapist, how I started doing each exercise at first, and how I've progressed to make the exercises more challenging.

Had mine done 5+ years ago.... long recovery... had a PT tell me that I'd never do planks again because I wouldn't get the flexion back.... HE WAS WRONG! :)

Thank you for posting this. I had bunion surgery and was given no instructions on how to walk/stretch my foot once out of the cast. This video helped tremendously :)

I just had surgery 2 weeks ago. I can't wait to be cleared to do these therapy exercises. Thank you so much for sharing. My physical therapy copayments are expensive. If I can cut back on therapy visits by doing these exercises shared. I'll save money and time ❤

Thank you so much. I’m so annoyed b/c my doctor gave me NO exercises to do and told me NOT to go to physical therapy. I can tell my foot/toe are struggling to re-learn how to function normally (like the muscles are stiff and have gone to sleep or something) so I will be trying all of these!

Doctors denied my pt even after I asked multiple times. I know have hip issues because I don’t walk flat. I’ll never be able to wear heels. I’m young and unmarried so this bothers me. This video is more help then any doctor gave me.

After being very disappointed with PT, I found your video and used your stretches for my first removal and now have no stiffness, even though I was warned I may not be able to do my usual workouts. Other than the scar, I'm good! I have my second surgery soon and know I will be great following this video. Thank you!

Thanks so much. I recieved NO info on what to day after surgery and was not given any PT. I'm 7 weeks into recovery so this has been a life saver.

So helpful! I did PT on my left one with copay, she did not give these exercises! Your info is invaluable! I just had my right one done one year later. I’m not spending $ on PT this time. Thank you!

Invaluable information, thank you for the bunion surgery series. It has assisted me tremendously. At four months post-op, I am still recovering.

I had surgery 3 years ago and went to physical therapy which really helped me, but I had to have the surgery again about 4 weeks ago and for some reason I was recommended not to go to therapy even though it would've been helpful. Thank you so much for this video, I just started doing these exercises two days ago, and I can already see an improvement in my mobility in my toe ❤🙏

I thought you very clear in your directions and pictures! Was very helpful to me. I am almost at week #4 and pain has not been unusual. Much of time, not at all, and sometimes it feels warm and itchy. I was able to take showers after 2 weeks and that helped a lot. Also had the hammertoe with my bunion and 3 of the toes got splints as they were curving too much towards the big toe. I use a large zip lock (I think quart size) filled with clear Karo syrup and then put inside a pillowcase. It freezes quickly but is nice and flexible so I can semi wrap it around my foot. I actually have two of these. I was hoping I would be driving after my 4 week appt in a few days, but maybe not based on your video. What a dramatic difference when I look at the Xrays! The other foot will be done once I can put all my weight on the foot that had surgery. I realize how much I had to depend on standing on one foot. Thanks for taking the time to video this.

Thanks for all the great exercises. I am 8 weeks out of surgery and my toes are very tight (had 2 pins as well). Was wearing the boot and was concerned about reversing any healing by doing anything so now I need to try to get back to normal walking. The DR recommended PT therapy only if I had pain which I really don't except for the end of my toes. Looking forward to trying these.

I’m glad I found this video, thank you for the very helpful instructions! Had my surgery over a year ago but haven’t been on top of my exercises. Doing this also relieved some lower back pain I’m experiencing. Thank you!!! 🙏

Wish I had found your videos after I had my surgery. I went to PT but not as good as yours. Because of the pain from my surgery and intolerance to the hardware I walked putting excess pressure on th outer part of my foot and ended up with Morton’s neuroma which has been worse that the bunion pain. I had the hardware removed from the proximal end of my metatarsal which made a huge difference and a decompression of the Morton’s neuroma but am still battling that pain

Thanks for this helpful video🌺🌺 I have stiff big toe joint.. how long did you use these exercises before you see improvement and be able to walk “normally”?

Hi Glory B, I just subscribed to your channel. Did you find your toes 2 and 3 to be stiff and feel a little numb when you did the toe curl? When did you start walking well after the surgery. I had a lapidus bunionectomy and tailors' bunionectomy. You are a wonderful teacher and the videos are very well done.
