Recovering from Bunion Surgery

If you have had bunion surgery and you are not yet thrilled with how you are doing -- here are some tips based on many years of working on people's feet who have had bunion surgery. Dr. Lisa Allen, PT presents how to do therapy yourself or what your therapist should be doing.

At BioMechanic Physical Therapy our techniques are founded in your body’s mechanics; from when your foot hits the ground then up through your knees, hips and beyond. A common example is when over pronation in the foot causes knee pain. Maybe you just need new shoes – not a knee operation. We can help sort that out.
Our Doctors of Physical Therapy ensure that the physics of you are optimized to get to the reason of why you; 1. developed a problem that came on slowly or 2. what mechanics may have been thrown off by your injury or surgery. We use precise tools to measure, our analytical minds to solve the problem , and our hands to restore you to perfect!
We know it is important to address your symptoms now, but more importantly — to also correct the source of your pain. This makes you feel better now – and it prevents your problem from coming back.
Call today – before it gets worse! – for a Free Screening!

I’m five days post op, both bunions removed so bed bound for a little while longer. I’ve had bunions since I was a teenager so I’ve never really had any proper flexibility in my big toes. As horrible as this part of my recovery is I’m so excited for when I can start my physio journey and I’m very grateful to you for sharing your knowledge free of charge.

At what point after surgery should you start? That should be mention on the video because some people don’t understand that it takes time for the bone to heal and you should not be messing with the bones while healing.

Thank you so much for this video! I am 10 weeks post-op with my left foot Lapidus Bunionectomy (my second surgery, right foot, is scheduled in 2 weeks). I have been struggling with this very issue - sore big toe. I have been doing my own physical therapy, but it has not had any lasting effect. Now I understand why - your video and explanations make perfect sense to me!
Wish my doctor would have shared this kind of information with regards to my rehab - this is a game changer!

This video helped me much after surgery. And it was my SECOND bunion surgery (other foot years earlier). I had a good PT, but this time I needed extra support and advice. I adore this video and am grateful for it!!!

Even the scar advice was helpful (as was the additional scar video). Unlike my last surgery I had a centimeter length of my scar that began to appear raised. The CICA gel recommendation wasn't mentioned by my PT. It was so informative. In short, this video helped me with issues that I had the second time I had bunion surgery that were never an issue the first time. One just never knows what variables may pop up each time. Thank you for the videos!

This is well presented and very informative! I'm 6 weeks post op lapiplasty. Wish I lived close to one of your offices! Will try the exercises on my own. If not successful I'll seek out a therapist. Thanks for the video!

Good video. It is a pity bunions often treated with a surgery that requires so complex rehabilitation. Wouldn't it be great if bones can be put to proper place w/out surgery?

I appreciate this video. I had bunion surgery 2.5 weeks ago. I am doing the stretches. I am hoping this foot gets back to normal soon! Oh and I’ve cracked my metatarsals twice! Again I appreciate the advice!

I am so happy I found your video. Two and a half weeks out from my Lapidus procedure. My big toe joint has motion, but it is kind of crunchy when I move it backward. Is this a result of the osteoarthritis in the toe joint? What do you recommend for this?

Im 6months post op and have started getting very worried my toes have stiffened too much and im still limping because my toes dont bend anymore. Heel lifts just hurt but now i know i need to extend the toe to create space in the joint. How often should i do these exercises being at advance recovery stage.. Thank you so much

I had a bunion removal surgery 3 months ago. I had a pin in my foot for 6 weeks. I am now about 5 weeks since my pin was removed and thanks to this video I regained full flexibility in my toe but I have a terrible pain in the ball of my foot now mainly under the big toe. Is this pain temporary? Is it because my foot is still healing? I hope I'm not stuck with this pain because it would prevent me from running or wearing heels.

Thank you for all of your tips— I’m wondering how long it will be before I can bear weight on the bunion surgery foot and walk. I am so worried about being laid up too long. I am an active 67 year old. I wish you were closer to where I live (Cleveland). Again, Many thanks.
