Synology DS220+ NAS Review

If you have been considering purchasing a Synology NAS for home or business in 2020, then chances are that you fall into one of two categories. The first category is is is made up of those who are aware of what a NAS can do, as well as how much more you will have to send for a capable and reliable solution. The other party is made up of either first time buyers or those that invested in an entry-level NAS a few years ago and are looking to upgrade. Both of these parties have always been the target market for the Synology standard NAS 2-bay in their flagship plus series. Arriving with good mid-range hardware inside, as well as a solid base from which to protect and share the data, the Synology DS2xx+ NAS family has always been a popular choice. The brand new Synology DS220+ is the long-awaited follow up to the DS218+ released back in autumn 2017 and has a lot to live up to in the eyes of new and established NAS owners alike. This new NAS has already been previewed HERE on the blog a few weeks ago and now we have the hardware here, so let's find out if the Synology DS220+ has been worth the wait, or has it arrived too little, too late? Let's find out

Great review! For those new to this, deciding to get one or not: I got one a couple of weeks ago. My first NAS. It takes a little while to get into everything, setting things up and learning what is what etc if you're new to it, but it's not hard, it's just that it takes a little while to get into it. Completely worth it. Once it's set up (for automatic backup in my case) you can almost forget about it. It'll do its thing perfectly. Recommended! One VERY important thing though: If you get this, make sure you have at least gigabit (1000mbit/s or more) speed ethernet (router etc) or your file transfer speed will be so slow it'll be almost useless! I saw many who had trouble with slow speeds who only had about 100 mbit speed connection. It was almost useless for them. I upgraded my equipment with a new router (from 100 to 1000mbit/s). Very important this.

Thanks for the informative review. I noticed you mixed up your description of RAID-0 and RAID-1, and contradicted yourself with what you said about RAID-1, so I will attempt to clarify for the non-techies out there.

RAID-0 is primarily used to significantly boost read and write performance of data but offers no redundancy, so is usually avoided for critical systems. Two drives in RAID-0 can be up to 100% faster than a stand-alone drive, adding a third drive can be up to an extra 50% speed boost etc... although the improvements usually aren't quite as high in real world use and taper off the more drives you add. Very important to have reliable backups as a single drive failure will cause total data loss, as you stated.

RAID-1 gives you some basic redundancy for your data, as you can suffer a disk failure in a 2-disk array and still carry on using it without losing data. You correctly stated that this reads and writes the exact same data to each drive, which obviously means that it CANNOT read or write data any faster than a single drive. _The issue of read speed improvements on RAID-1 is fairly contentious, as there are many claims it offers faster read speeds. I have not seen reliable benchmarks to prove this is the case and do not recall having tested this on any of the servers I have managed, for what it is worth._

Very helpful otherwise, thank you.

I will will be uploading some very long videos to YouTube in the near future. How well would this unit handle that task? Would the 920 be a better option or do I need to look for a different solution? Hope you can help? Thank

Japanese manual and labels are added by ASK, who is famous distributor in Japan.
Fieldlake, who is another distributor in Japan, they don't add Japanese manual. Also, they add only warranty label on the box.

I'm totally lost with all the models out there and can't decide which one to buy.
Would really appreciate it if you can help me to decide in which is the best Synology for a freelancer video editor. I need it to edit straight from the NAS. 2 bays would be good for me with an option to expand if needed.
Thanks in advance!

Too right mate, an external PSU is far easier to replace. Most people would have to RMA a NAS with a failed internal PSU whereas external allows for the user to order another PSU to keep on hand in case of emergence.

Hi there grate review ....I think its good because I am not very good with this topic and in the end i have a very good idea about the product. So just in summary is this NAS good for a plex server for 4k HDR play (50-100gb files) if i have an up to date LG oled C9 tv. My understanding is that the TV will read the files without the need of transcoding. In general i need a nas for 4k movies/ flac music and backing family photos...it this the best way to go what will be the best combo NAS/driver for this purpose?
