Have you ever experienced unexplained allergy-like symptoms, digestive issues, or persistent fatigue? It could be histamine intolerance, a condition that’s more common than you think. In this episode, Dr. Elizabeth Boham joins me to examine real patient stories, dive deep into the gut-brain connection, and share how you can manage histamine intolerance through personalized treatments, stress management, and gut health optimization. Whether it's genetic or lifestyle-related, histamine intolerance doesn't have to be a lifelong battle.

In this episode, we discuss:

The common symptoms of histamine intolerance

The importance of the DAO enzyme

Why low-histamine diets may not be a long-term solution

Why stress and gut health are key triggers

The difference between histamine intolerance and and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS)

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Pendulum, ARMRA, and Our Place.

Thx for this informative vid! Don’t forget that histamine can also drive chronic scalp problems, not just body rashes. Took me 15 years to figure this out since conventional MD’s had NO CLUE. I addressed the hist imbalance & my scalp cleared up & my hair is regrowing! My scalp issues were considered seborrheic derm, but root cause was hist all along!

Two to four weeks recommendations/restrictions on those foods to restore your body/guy balance:
1. Remove all alcohol from your diet
2. Eat freshly made meals (freeze the leftovers) as the histamine increases with time.
3. Minimum adjectives (like sulfates etc) in the food as it could spike the histamine level.
4. Aged cheese and fermented foods.
5. Canned and smoked foods
6. Soy sauce, vinegar (again, any fermented foods)
7. Avocados, spinach, citrus foods - as it may triggered the histamine spike.

Root causes:
- stress
- mold

This is so timely!!!! My neck breaks out with certain food, my nose gets stuffy and I have med brain fog. I’m still trying to figure out what foods cause this.
Thank you so much for taking the time to discuss. I can’t tell you how emotional I am that you guys are posting this information.
Thank you, thank you thank you!
Last thing, I don’t see in the show notes, the phases, and the protocol per phase. I would be forever grateful if you could post it, please.

Anyone here struggling with this - *there's HOPE. I am free of this after a basically life threatening issue with histamine.* I had a *severe asthma* attack (almost worthy of the hospital) every time I ate ANYTHING (not just high histamine food) when my issue was at its worst because your body makes histamine to start the stomach acid flow and I was THAT sensitive. So, needless to say, I learned to fast. And, I attribute fasting (prolonged 3-5 days and IF) and eating low histamine food to my healing. It took about 6 months to get so my asthma essentially went away and another 6 to really get on solid ground. Now, I can eat what I want as far as histamines go, but I'm mindful not to let the bucket get too full since I think I probably have issues producing DAO.

My histamine issues began when my body finally reached a breaking point with oxalate accumulation after decades of consuming high oxalate so called healthy foods… been dumping oxalates for 18 months. Symptoms have improved remarkably as well as having healed my leaky gut with BP 157.

My histamine nightmare was brought on by mold.
Does MTHFR play a role as well?

I’m 45 year old women and I’ve been having migraines around period since I was a teenager. The older I got the longer my migraines lasted. I also struggled from time to time with histamine intolerance. I discovered solution for my migraines few months ago. I make green juice from 30 different leafy greens and vegetables. (I use slow juicer) I make big batch once in two weeks and freeze it in small jars. One jar (around 2cups) lasts two days. I drink it every single day in the morning prior breakfast for the last 4 months. Haven’t had a migraine since I started. In addition I am more consistent with taking magnesium especially one week prior period.

Hi there, this is a great episode, three quick questions: 1) can you recommend which brand of DAO enzyme to take? 2) can you link to the food phases handout that Dr. Boham mentioned? I couldn't find it in the show notes or elsewhere. 3) can you explain the difference between MCAS and histamine intolerance? I never heard a clear distinction. Thank you!

Heavy metal toxicity can also cause mast cell activation and histamine intolerance! That hasn’t been mentioned yet.

For my fellow health professionals, please let me note:
If you have diabetes patients who cannot control their blood sugar, consider they also have this and they may really need to avoid certain foods. I have like 10 case studies where this has been true.
