Oculus Quest VS Oculus Rift S 2020 Guide

Hello!

I have used the Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift solid for more than a year now, receiving both of the headsets practically on launch day. After a year of usage for both of them my thoughts and general consensus on what YOU should buy has changed significantly. After the Quest has received update after update and the Rift S has received pretty much nothing new... the tides have definitely shifted. Here is my 2020 analysis of the Oculus Quest Versus the Oculus Rift S.

As someone that owns the Rift S, I am very upset with Oculus. They never push out important updates and never do anything with the issues. The driver issues, hand tracking issues, and the poor build quality really upsets me. While I still love my Rift S, i am personally unhappy with the poor support from Oculus.

Thrill: "don't be too upset if you own a rift s already though, its a perfectly fine and functional headset"
Me: crying because my rift s crashed for the 3rd time today

Interesting take. Just returned a Quest for a Rift S and the Rift S has been performing much better for PCVR then the Quest. The sharpness and clarity difference is very noticeable. Using it for iRacing, seeing text clear while driving 180mph is very important and the Rift S delivers on that. For some reason I can also raise the graphics using the Rift S and still have a smooth 80fps experience. With Link, even lowering graphic settings I would get a lot of dropped frames and just not a smooth experience.

The Quest is a great device for many and a great step to bring VR to the masses but you need to decide what's most important to you and how you prefer to use your device.

Yea had those problems with the Rift S too in the beginning but after a few updates everything got solved for me.
Haven't had issues like that in months, neither robotic mic sound.
For me the headset works as intended.

My main issue with the quest vs rift S is immersion and latency. The quest 72hz just always feels less immersive to me. Through all the headsets I've used, the lower hz always changes the feel of the game, even if you can't "see" it. For that reason I just couldn't stay with the quest over my rift S. I'll admit that I haven't used the quest with link in a few months, but when I did the controller tracking latency was noticable for me as well in games like beatsaber, where my rift S feels a lot closer to the Vive or my cv1 in that regard

That said, with the rumors of a new quest having 90hz among other updates to latency and comfort, that would be a definite choice

Hey thrill, for your b-roll, turn autofocus off once you’ve found your focus point so you don’t see any drifting in your shots.

I disagree with this video. I own both the Rift S and the Quest and I would never recommend getting the Quest as a PC based headset. It's way too uncomdortable for that, even with expensive modifications. Also, with the Rift S I never experience any of the problems mentioned here (no robot voice, no crashes). The Rift S has a clearer picture, it's the most comfortable headset Oculus ever made, and it just works. I also think it's pretty crazy to wear a charging battery in front of your eyes for hours. Rechargable batteries are not 100% safe, and it's bad enough when we wear them in our pockets - let alone in our face. The Quest is a neat gadget to throw into a backpack and showing it to friends for a quick round of Beat Saber. But it can not replace a dedicated PC VR headset that you want to wear for hours.

Idk I bought a quest in august but after giving it some thought and trying my friend's rift s I decided that the rift s is way more comfortable and does PCVR better then the quest with link which is how I always play anyways so I sold my quest and got a rift s and fortunately neither me or my friend had the problems you mentioned and my friend actually uses his rift s as his main microphone on his pc since he doesn't have one and overall I'm happy with this decision because like you said all the stuff that the quest is getting is just stuff that the rift s had from the beginning so maybe it'll be nice if they add hand tracking to the rift s but I don't really care even if they don't I honestly don't think ill even use it that much
