Hybrid-powered Juke rival put to the test

Let CarGurus help you find your next car:

The 2022 Toyota Yaris Cross is a small crossover that rivals the likes of the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Ford Puma. It might be based on Toyota's Yaris supermini, but thanks to its increased ride height and chunky body cladding, it looks and feels like a much more substantial vehicle.

Power comes from Toyota's hybrid system - there's no simple petrol or diesel engines offered. The 'self-charging' hybrid (it can't be plugged in) pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a battery and electric motor to deliver 114bhp. It is available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

In this CarGurus UK review, Rebecca Jackson takes an in-depth look at the Yaris Cross to see how it measures up for practicality, equipment, technology, performance, handling and comfort.

Installs baby seat in with no issues - “That was a bit of a faff”

The yaris cross is brilliant, if you drive town and country, you could like me achieve 64 mpg. It does not rev with the CvT like the old yaris model, and only sounds noisy because of the difference between electric power and petrol engine , which is not very noticeable anyway, I bought mine new this year, and CANNOT fault it.
If you want more room then go for the Rav 4 or the Corolla Cross model.

Pretty good review. You don't really cover the way the ev and petrol engine work around town however. It's possible to achieve over 100mpg.

We got our in April this year. It suits our needs and we love it especially the fuel economy! Most of all it’s a Toyota, which we have reverted back to which are far better vehicles than the last two Vauxhall’s we previously owned! We are never buying anything but Japanese vehicles

Actually visited a Toyota garage today and compared the standard Yaris and Corolla with the Yaris Cross. The Yaris Cross offers about the same rear space as the Corolla, but far better visibility for rear passengers. It's actually very good in the back, and does offer the extra room you'd wish for over the standard Yaris. It's just a pity those rear doors not opening wide enough, have created such a poor initial impression, reinforced by the penny-pinching approach - no proper rear armrest, no rear air vents, no charging points, and no rear seat pockets. Just seats, in fact.

I watched your CHR review on the updated model you sounded like you preferred that car to the Yaris Cross

If you drive it a certain way it gets way above those mpg figures i get 70 plus mpg on the motorway and 80 to 90 mpg around town and that’s in a 2020 CHR

Nice review. I recently had the Yaris Cross to test also, I found the same in the back and was a struggle with the rubber protective backing on the seats to put the seats back up, something as simple as just a cut out where the latch was would make it so much easier. I found it a pleasure to drive though and as always Toyota's hybrid system is great.

It's sooo annoying every single review with this baby seat issue. You installed that with absolutely no problem. Quite easy actually. Is it a downside for 6footers? I do not believe very large individuals would be buying this car to begin with.

A great review Rebecca some interesting food for thought. Performance for me might be an issue though with my 30 mile commute to work involving motorways, country roads and city traffic. If they had a more cooking version, say instead of the Yaris Cross to a Yaris Angry or Yaris Livid it might just be worth considering. In this form the Yaris Cross seems more like a Yaris Upset. Styling looks great and as space should be fine for my use though so I might take a test drive anyway when it cones to change.

The dashboard is pretty much the same as the Yaris 2021.

Any particular reason why you make a video about a car and then don't show it at least once from the side profile ?
That's actually the only angle where you can tell how the car looks like, which I still don't do after watching this clip ...

Car plates being reviewed on separate channels these days, eh?

I thought the focus on fitting the child seat was a bit harsh to start - but, I guess, quite a few families will view the regular Yaris as too small, and ‘look up’ to this cross version for that extra space. I do wonder if anyone senior at Toyota has tried to sit in the back of this car?

Agree with your summing up, was a tough call but, in the end I plonked for the Ford Puma purely for a more enjoyable drive.….great review 👍
