Come Follow Me Insights (Doctrine and Covenants 88, Aug 9-15)

0:00 D&C 88 is designated as the “olive leaf” – the Lord’s message of peace. Contrast this with D&C 87 which contains a prophecy of the civil war. Symbolism of the Olive Leaf as displayed on the back of a U.S. dollar bill and the Olive Tree as relied upon in Mediterranean cultures.
8:00 Overview of D&C 88. Verses 1-116 reveals cosmic theology. Verses 117-141 provides practical application.
9:38 Verse 3-5: “I now send upon you another Comforter”. A promise for God’s servants, friends, and sons and daughters. Word study on “comforter”: the strength of God is with us. Cross reference with John 14:16. The Greek root word for comforter is paraclete. Look up this word to gain further insight.
14:07 Verse 6: Symbolism that shows the capacity of Jesus Christ. He who ascended above ALL, descended below ALL things so that he could lift and succor us. Only God can contain ALL things.
16:30 Verses 3-6: What does the phrase “calling and election made sure” mean? To be elected means to be gathered. Jesus is calling us to be gathered. We make that sure by moving forward step by step on the covenant path.
20:30 Verses 7-13 Jesus Christ is the light of the sun, moon, stars, and earth. Nothing is independent of Him. There is no space that is not directly affected by God. Light that fills the immensity of space is seen at a macro level (outer space) and a microlevel (inner space).
26:17 Verse 15-17: The spirit and the body are the soul of man. “The redemption of the soul is through him that quickeneth all things.” The word “quick” means to be alive. The light of God provides life.
30:49 Verses 17-32 The earth will go through the same sanctification process that we must go through. Those prepared for the celestial glory will inherit the earth. We must abide by the law to be sanctified by the law. We are “quickened” by the glory of that which we are willing to receive. The word “willing” has to do with covenantal loyalty.
36:36 Verse 33: God is trying to give us a gift of the celestial law. What can we do to receive the gift?
39:11 Verses 34-39 The word “Law” refers to God’s covenantal instruction. The word “abide” comes from the same root word as trust. Do we trust God or trust sin? We are building our ability to trust in God and receive more from Him.
44:05 verse 41-47 The all-encompassing nature of God. The sun, moon, and stars follow a fixed pattern. Men have been given their agency and we may choose to abide by the law. We can look for the majesty and power of God in His creations including our fellowmen.
47:58 Verses 48-49 Do we comprehend God when He comes into our lives? Verses 50-64 The parable of the man sending his servants into the field and visiting them in turn. God comes to us according to His timing. Good things come to those who love the Lord. Keep walking, keep asking.
56:56 Verses 67-80 How we can draw near to God and become sanctified. Have an eye single to God’s glory, trust Him, cast away idle thoughts, gather together, prepare and sanctify yourselves, continue in prayer and fasting, teach one another the doctrine of the kingdom.
1:02:40 Truth versus misinformation. In this day of easy access to information, we need to seek after reliable sources. Who are the trusted voices you turn to? Joy expands as we seek truth.
1:06:49 Verse 83-88. Seek God today. “Abide in the liberty wherewith ye are made free”. Sin leads to bondage.
1:10:01 Verses 94-116 The seven angelic trumps call forth the dead in their order, proclaim the restoration of the gospel, the fall of Babylon, and the battle of the great God. You can choose today to be part of the army of God.
1:15:14 Verse 117-125 Therefore . . . seek learning by study and by faith. Establish a house of God (a temple) and “clothe yourselves with the bond of charity.” The word “teach” means to touch or point to. Gospel teachers touch people one by one. Revelation is scattered among us.
1:23:33 Conclusion: The Great Seal of the United States reminds us that from many we can become one. We can cease to do those things that drive us apart and become unified while protecting individual uniqueness.

I came to these lessons not to long ago. I am so faraway from God, even as I was raised and born in to the church. The more I hear and study these beautiful gospel by these two angels I can hear the voice of the lord to me saying; Nefi there are still hope for you although the long path there are still hope and I am going to try even in the depths of my soul that are in sin and darkness I have to try :( Thank you both of you to teach that path! I will try.

Man o man if they were to make you teachers and put you in the public school system that would be a remarkable thing for our country and students. But I know they would throw you out even though y'all have great teaching skills and the guidance of the spirit. Thank God we have you to teach us in the church! This church is truly the Church of Jesus Christ and his leadership. Please continue in this great role of teaching the Lord's students week by week. I'm grateful at this time for YouTube carrying these lessons so it will brighten our lives and Future in Jesus Christ. I find that whenever I watch one of these presentations, I think in my mind: Which of these verses, ideas, and sermons should I address, first?!! Study of the gospel truths in seciton 88, is lofty but break it down folks or you will become discouraged! Pick on one thing at a time to "work" on. Then go back week after week and take another bite. After all these years in the church (I am 75), where am I? The Tyler and Taylor team give hope not distress!

Thank you for speaking about the timing of promised blessings and that we need to trust the Lord. I am in that situation where I have fasted and prayed, plead, and agonized over my deepest desire and fondest hope for literally decades. Some of my hopes won’t ever happen in mortality now (which has been a deeply painful pill to swallow) and some I still plead will happen. And I have sat there in meetings and pondered what is wrong with my faith, with me, why my tears don’t seem to mean anything, that I must not mean anything to the Lord, or I must have to be perfect first in order to get those blessings, etc. (all those bad, dark thoughts that are wrong). I realize that He knows the whole situation and I should trust Him. I know (once this crucible trial is over) that I will look back and see that He gave me the best. Currently, it’s sometimes difficult to fathom what on earth I’m so dense about that it’s better for me to walk this trial than not and I fervently pray that I’ll learn it once and for all so I can move forward. But, I am grateful for the reminder that the blessings are promised and to trust the Lord and to trust Him and His knowledge. Thank you ❤️.

I just gave a talk in sacrament meeting last month on D&C 76 and taught that we can be assured of exaltation as we “always have His Spirit to be with them” (us). This is why the sacrament is the central covenant of the Sabbath. As we have the spirit with us we are living in the light and therefore living the celestial law. We need to understand that God is a merciful Father and all he wants is our company eternally, just as we yearn for a child we have lost or who is far away from us.
