0:00 Historical background leading up to the martyrdom. Church events between July 1833 and July 1834 include both internal and external tensions.
6:15 External tensions include political differences and the upcoming 1844 presidential election.
16:01 Joseph determines the Saints will need to leave the United States to find safety. A council of 50 is established to seek out a place for members to move to.
17:13 High level apostasy and the creation of the Nauvoo Expositor. The Nauvoo charter granted the city the ability to remove nuisances to the town. The press that prints the Expositor is destroyed. Joseph and Hyrum go to Iowa for safety.
23:30 Joseph is asked to return to Nauvoo. He seems to know his time on earth is coming to an end.
29:04 The fateful day of June 27, 1844. John Taylor and Willard Richards choose to stay with Joseph and Hyrum.
36:18 The mob rushed the jail. Hyrum and Joseph are killed. John Taylor is badly wounded. Willard Richards receives little harm.
49:20 D&C 135. Verses 1-3 Closing testimony and tribute to Joseph Smith. Questions are discussed about the authorship of this section.
56:08 Verse 4. On June 24, the same morning Joseph and Hyrum left for Carthage, Hyrum read Ether 12: 36-38. “And now I . . . bid farewell . . . until we shall meet before the judgment seat of Christ.”
1:00:13 The Hebrew meaning of the name Joseph is to add to or to gather. The Hebrew name for Hyrum is my brother is exalted. On the 10-year anniversary of the martyrdom, John Taylor gives his testimony as a living witness to the character and calling of Joseph Smith, the Prophet.
1:06:18 Conclusion of Part 1. Invitation extended to each of us to turn heavenward and recognize that Jesus is at the head of this work.
1:07:34 Music Video: A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief sung by Benjamin Griffin in the Carthage Jail. A music tribute to Joseph Smith, the Prophet.

Imagine my surprise when earlier this year I found out that Willard Richards is in my lineage! None of my family were members of the Church until the 1980"s.. How grateful I am that the missionaries phone tracked my sister and brought the Gospel to our family in these latter days. Thank you Book of Mormon Central for your commitment to teaching the truths of the scriptures! With gratitude...

I haven't been looking forward to this week in our studies because of the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum. Now that I've watched your instruction and inspired teachings, my heart is full of joy that we are part of the the Last Dispensation lead by the prophet Joseph Smith. Thank you for your time and testimony to bless and strengthen our testimonies.

Dr. Dirkmaat taught me Utah History at the BYU Salt Lake Center ten years ago. I'll never forget the day that he told us the story of the martyrdom in class. I loved hearing it again on Book of Mormon Central today. He was an amazing teacher back then and has only gotten better. Thanks for having him on the podcast.

We’re very appreciative of this segment. One of the best, gave more reasons to believe and gained a concrete testimony that joseph smith jr was a prophet of the restoration …. And a true prophet of God…

Wonderful. Praise to the man who communed with Jehovah. Also of note. Often called the 3rd martyr is righteous brother Samuel Smith who rode to Carthage but was chased by the mob. He died within a month many testify of exhaustion and effects as a result of his efforts to help his brothers that fateful day. Mother Smith lost three sons within a month.
