After the Titanic struck the iceberg, the ship’s 'unsinkable' design proved inadequate. As the forward compartments filled with water, Thomas Andrews predicted the ship’s imminent sinking. Distress signals went out, but the Carpathia, over 58 nautical miles away, wouldn’t arrive in time. Panic spread, lifeboats were launched half-empty due to fears of full capacity, and the Titanic’s musicians played on, offering some solace. With hope fading, many faced a grim fate in the freezing North Atlantic waters.

It was reported during a documentary that a fire broke out near the front of the ship during construction.

The closest ship was the Californian and despite being in visual range of Titanic and seeing the distress rockets, they took no action.
