James 2 isn’t talking about how to be saved but how sincere faith is shown by works. It’s not saying works save you.

You dont seem to complete the thought you started about the good thief. its possible this argument is used so much because it is valid. afterall we can deduce the thief was a believer as he proves with "when you come into your kingdom( he views Jesus as God) AND he tells us that he is deserving of his punishment, so he probably had a life of sin ending when the the jig was up, yet I cant deduce any good work or fruits from anything in the verse. but I do think that we have to do our part. no blood can totally remove sin. I do my part. and my part is my fruits and works which there are untold many of giving to the poor.
