Tesla vs. Ford vs. Hyundai: Which EV Has the Best Tech? | WSJ

Battery charging. Semi-autonomous driving. Giant touchscreens. EVs have become computers on wheels. But which EV is the best within a $60,000 budget: the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5 or the Volkswagen ID.4?

WSJ’s Joanna Stern put three of the leading car options to the test on a road trip and then leased the best one. She also called MKBHD for some advice.

"I've always dreamed of having a dongle to charge ny car" - dont let your dreams be dreams, Joanna

“Because I’ve always dreamed of having a dongle to charge my car” is the best line to come out of this

You dropped the Kia and the VW at the start with no explanation. I think you should at least mention why they didn't make the cut.

You completely failed to mention that Ford's BlueCruise only works on *select* highways that have been pre-mapped, which isn't that many. Tesla's semi-autonomous navigation works on *any* highway in the U.S. That's a huge differentiator.

As you're considering road tripping I'm surprised you didn't compare cargo space and comfort as well.

No offense or anything, but she obviously has no idea what she's talking about. We don't know why she ruled the other 2 EV at the beginning (the EV6 and the Ioniq 5 are basically the same car), or why they went on a track since there's no test of the 3 cars in this video although "they had used them at the track a lot". It really feel like it was put together and filmed last minute, without any serious test or even a script in mind, although she said she searched the best car for two months! What about cargo space (and the frunk), space for the passengers, comfort, options if any, the different features, reliability, the price of charging the cars (since they don't have the same battery and consumption)... This video is a joke.

Fun video. Wish she'd gone a little more in depth on some of the functionality, specifically with infotainment. If you count carplay as part of it, I actually prefer the Ioniq's infotainment to tesla model y or 3 (much easier to control climate, and having dual screens is a huge plus). Also, it's easy to set the carplay to go full screen, which would have alleviated her main issue with it.

I’d be curious what factors went Into striking down the ev6 and the id4, from the final three shown in the video?

Hats off to early adopters of EV's. I consistently annoy them by referring to them as beta testers. But honestly at this point if you are an EV owner, you truly are a beta tester as technologies and standards are still rapidly evolving. There is nothing wrong with owning an EV at this point and they are rapidly maturing but they still stand to mature much more over the next 5 years.

What was the point of having Tesla win almost all the rounds if she leased a Ford?

Wait… why was the Kia EV6 and Volkswagen ID.4 disqualified from the review after the first 30 seconds? Seems like a notable omission, given they are closer to $40k than these $60k models tested…

That's a mistake. The Model Y is a much better car. When she took over on the highway when it was doing the exit she was just scared. If you are looking at the screen it is clear the car was going to take the exit, she took over after she was on the offramp. I don't know how "Lane Change Unavailable" is a comforting message. Literally means the car doesn't feel confident enough when it is clearly safe to change lanes. Points to its unreliability. Also, 2-3 times a year of supercharging for 6+ hours at a time? + I don't think already built cars are even compatible with the future transition to Tesla Chargers.

How can you give ford the win for self driving when it only works on some roads, while Tesla has full self driving capabilities?

The Model Y and Mach-E are the best of this group for sure. You picked the wrong one in the end, but it's still a nice little car.

For those that are curious shortly after this video was released Stern went on the Pivot podcast with Kara Swisher and addressed what happened with the first 3 cars she dropped immediately. If I remember it just kind of came down to taste.

This report shows why traditional journalism is in decline and should no longer be taken seriously. The end result is comic and uninformative.

People need to STOP CHARGING TO 100%!! It wastes time at chargers especially when other people need to charge and it is horrible for the battery. It enough people are telling people what they need to know.

I think the lease option is the wisest bit of advice here. The tech keeps getting better and better. Really happy to see the Ford being close to Tesla and hope Hyundai smartens up and goes with the NACS. I really hope for lots of options in the future :)

It is a very good example of advertising by Ford :-)😅

I think the part missing from this assessment is the entertainment you can get on the infotainment. If you have kids, having Netflix and games on your Tesla goes a way
