When my son, then 4, was asked to look at the barn the technicians demeanor changed. He asked for help, the next technician told my him, "Good job buddy. You did great!", but I could tell something was going on. The doctor told us he had cataracts. They were really bad. I was told, "imagine trying to see through wax paper that has some holes poked in it.
He's fine now. Wears bifocals. But I will always associate that barn with this memory.

The calming effect she's talking about is not an accident. It's called the Savannah Hypothesis. Basically in our evolutionary history we felt calmer when we could see open fields and detect threats easier

There's nothing calming to me about these scenes... because before they'd have that poof of air that comes after looking at that supposed calming picture. However, I tense up, because air is going into your eye.

The fact that looking into the distance is calming probably has to do with a lack of open spaces and opportunities for you to broaden your visual field. Andrew Huberman has talked about this recently that having the vision focused on objects close to use keeps the focus narrow and there are neurological effects on perception and arousal.

I've had glasses pretty much my whole life. Do I really need to do this every time? I mean, you have my old glasses and get the the prescription off of them. That's an excellent starting point. And since this isn't the first pair I've gotten from this doctor, your notes about my last script should also function as a good starting point.

I've never seen them before now. My eye tests usually involve letters or various sizes.
