Playing The Purdie Shuffle Everywhere | The Drum Department 🥁 (Ep.35)

The Purdie Shuffle is a right of passage for many drummers - It’s quite complex and difficult to play, but when it’s played right, it feels so good. Though this groove and variations thereof have already been used in several different songs (Led Zepplin’s Fool In the Rain, Toto’s Rosanna and Home at Last by Steely Dan)

Bernard recorded Home At Last by Steely Dan in 1977, Zep recorded Fool In The Rain in 1979.

I recall buying Aja when it came out in 1977. I listened to that album and was blown away. When I heard "Home At Last, " that was the first time I'd heard the Purdie Shuffle. I got out my book of blank staff paper and listened to it over and over until I had the transcription down. That was long before the internet. I practiced that until I got the independence down and started playing it pretty well. When the internet came out, I was pleased to fined the transcriptions matched mine from '77, so I knew I was doing it right. Love that groove.

At some point in 1969, John Bonham heard the song “Foolish Fool” by Dee Dee Warwick, featuring Bernard Purdie. The drum production and sound on that song was one of Bonhams main influences. Bernard Purdie was 30 at the time, and Bonham was 21.

I imagine Purdie got to the
shuffle first.

The Purdie Shuffle goes great on top of Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel" and also works on Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground"

In my experience drummers call it the Purdie shuffle...guitarists call it the Roxanna Shuffle. It's the first groove I play anytime I play in a drum shop. It leaves no questions as to ones ability on drums. Not easy and the spacing is a dead give away as to whether it's grooving or not. Thank you Mr. Purdie for be original in every way.

I think the best exponent of the half time shuffle today is ash soan... it is so smooth when he plays it...

I saw John Bonham around 1966 with Robert Plant's Band of Joy in Quaintways Chester UK where I saw many embryonic rock legends. He played the "Fool in the Rain" rhythm but with (right hand lead, left ghost notes) hi hat and snare thus: RllRllSllRll. I played all those shuffles that way for many years. I don't know when Bonham changed it but he was a great friend of Carmine Appice and probably a few other American players who were slightly ahead of the English curve at that time. You'd have to go to two maybe three major cities to find a drum teacher of that quality. Though I observed a couple of local drummers who came back from the US with radically changed techniques in the 1970s and as late as the 1980s.

The Rosanna shuffle is my personal favorite out of this group. I love all of them to be fair, but Porcaro had something going on that really hits for me. Great video. You guys should go elbow deep more often.

High Fade are local to me. The bass player Oliver used to play in a cool ska band years ago and is just an awesome bass player and all round lovely dude. Harry on guitar is absolutely next level as well! It’s been cool to see them going viral and stuff they totally deserve all the attention they’re getting🤘
