SHUFFLE LIKE BONHAM, PURDIE, PORCARO & COPELAND with this One Hand Pattern

In this video, I demonstrate how you can learn to shuffle like John Bonham, Bernard Purdie, Jeff Porcaro & Stewart Copeland by learning one hand pattern very well.

What Bonham, Purdie, Porcaro and Copeland have in common in their shuffle, is their use of the middle triplet ghost note. That is the main ingredient that makes their shuffle sound great.

Most drummers try learning their shuffle by practicing them slowly and or breaking them up into smaller sections. That works well if your hands are developed enough to pull it off. But if they are not, these shuffles become quite difficult to learn.

This video shows you the one hand pattern it takes to learn these grooves quicker and easier.

The idea is to treat this hand pattern like it's a stick control pattern and that you are learning it as part of your hand development process. When you can do it at 150 bpm - 180 bpm, then learning these Bonham, Purdie, Porcaro, Copeland type shuffle becomes so much easier to learn.

Your presentation was brilliant in its simplicity. Buddy Rich used to say, "If you can't do it on one surface, you have no business trying to do it on more than one surface"

Love the simplicity of your lessons. Would love to see a breakdown on ZZ Top’s The Grange .

I’m an older drummer, haven’t been playing very long only a few years. I feel really connected to your teaching style and presentation of material. Thanks for putting this together!

Almost every other drum teacher insists on trying to blind you with science. This was perfect. Well done!

Very late coming across this video and thankfully it has turned out to be perfect timing as I have just started to learn Fool in the Rain shuffle.
What a great, clear and precise video! I was simply trying to learn the hi-hat / snare parts but noticed I couldn’t get that “smoothness” between my left and right hands.
So now I am going to do this sticking exercise and hopefully make much quicker progress.
Thanks for the great advice!

Wow! I have seen many videos on this type of shuffle. None that I have seen have ever explained the back-beat part of the pattern!!
I can't thank you enough. I didn't realize it was basically a left-hand flam followed by a LH grace note Excellent explanation!!!!
After watching this video I could actually play the pattern. I just have to "smooth" it out and get it 150 bpm and faster. Thank you!

I've seen some great breakdowns on the individual songs you referenced, but this by far is the most brilliant lesson on learning the hand pattern and applying it to ALL shuffle songs.
If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime

Also, I hope you take this as a complement, but "loved" you as "Mr. White" in Reservoir Dogs and "Winston Wolfe" in Pulp Fiction!

Thank you Marco,
one of the best teachings I have seen on YouTube. Why? You break it down to the point until every step is clear and easily understood and then you build it up again. Extremely helpful to avoid mistakes when you learn without a teacher at your side.

I love this. I can play Fool in the Rain but it literally took years of working on it. If I saw this before it would have taken MUCH less time. The next shuffle I want to learn is the Purdie shuffle. Now it will take less time and not be so intimidating. Thank you!!

This was a great lesson! I had worked hard on learning the Bernard Purdie shuffle but never got it smooth enough to make use of it. (That was a long, LONG time ago!) Wish I had known about this then. Makes me want to crack open the Syncopation book I have and use it to work on patterns from it!

I have never seen this good a breakdown and lesson on shuffling. I saw a couple of others but yours REALLY drove it home and made it *click*.

With your talent for drumming and teaching, I'm amazed that you don't have WAY more subscribers. But you just gained another one.
