Xi Jinping vows to develop China's army into a 'great wall of steel'

China’s President has given the closing speech at the country’s annual parliamentary meeting known as the National People’s Congress.

Xi Jinping used his address to vow to develop China's military, which he says needs to become a “Great Wall of Steel”.

Xi has begun his third term as head of state after being appointed by the country's parliament.

China’s president kicked off the new era with an uncompromising message to the world.

“We should strengthen national defence and army modernisation, building the people’s army into a great wall of steel,” he said.

“It effectively safeguards national security, sovereignty and developing interests.”
